In the 60’s IBM used selenium rectifiers. If you look at a periodic table, group 16, you’ll encounter what’s referred to as the “stinkogens”.
Starting with sulphur, as you move down the column things get exponentially smellier.

Today I managed to get the 120V wiring done and rectifiers installed in the power supply I'm doing up.
The output transformer now has a plate welded on, to hold it in.
This starter starts turning at 25A the current goes up with speed.
The rectifiers seem to be the weak link.
