Rural Kentuckians often use redcedar (Juniperus virginiana) as Christmas trees. In spring, they carry a decorative rust disease, Gymnosporangium juniperi-virginianae, which alternates between junipers and rosaceous trees (here on a redcedar branch and serviceberry fruit).

Oh, deer. Rubbing of eastern redcedar (Juniperus virginiana) by deer kills a lot of trees. It is a complex behavior, but I suspect that their preference for redcedar, with its complex secondary chemistry, may be medicinal. In this woodland, deer only rub redcedar, no other trees.

A couple of decaying but still whole maple leaves, one dark maroon, one ochre with dark spots, are surrounded by scattered miscellaneous debris. There are dark brown to medium brown six redcedar female cones, with their scales wide open. There is a reddish brown stubby piece of redcedar stem, with sharp triangular scales. There are various sized pieces of brick red redcedar leaves. There are a few tan, small Douglas fir and redcedar seeds. Most of the fallings are centered on a scarred white wooden table top, the smaller pieces dispersed around the edges.
