Totally. That was a hard lesson for me to learn at the beginning of redditgifts.

When redditgifts did Gifts for Teachers, one teacher I will never forget was at a school, I think in Detroit?, where the teachers had literally no classroom budget because the money went to providing cafeteria breakfast lunch & dinner to the students and their families. Fuck these monsters.

I'm going to say reddit around the 2010s.
Early reddit was super nerdy, pg and fans, etc. It supplanted /. for me but was meh.

But around & after 2010 is when you get the golden age of novelty accounts, narwhal memes, redditgifts, all that fun stuff, but before they were trying to turn real profit.
Can I ask y’all a genuine question?

In all your life online, what’s the greatest social media you’ve ever used?

The first year of redditgifts, ChewbaccasAbortion reached out because they were afraid the name would be an issue lol. Usernames are the best.

Paul Reubens was a RedditGifts Secret Santa. Sadly, his assistant accidentally discarded the gift he received. It was a bike helmet covered in toy figures glued by hand. He found one of the toys & created a lovely thank you/apology post in the gift gallery. He was just super sweet.

I'm in Los Angeles and I was a community manager (I made redditgifts, etc). I did have an interview today (the first one in months lol) so I'm trying to be hopeful but not TOO hopeful 😬

I miss RedditGifts. I loved doing the Trick or Treat & the Christmas exchanges. For the Trick or Treat exchange, if I was matched with someone in the Midwest, East Coast, or the South, especially "Flyover Country" I would go out of my way to include a whole ass pan de muerto & other Mexican treats.

Honestly, this might have been one of the reasons Redditgifts was able to be successful. We were not beholden to anyone, and even after we were acquired, we had significant autonomy, and no profit was expected of us for the first two years after.

In the early days of Redditgifts, we had our 1st paid partnership w a film. The Friday before it was to run, an engineer decided it wasn't good for reddit & threw the whole thing into disarray. There was always this batshit internal resistance to profit. I'm sure it's different now 🙃
Reading Reddit's S1 for their IPO and this company is a dog, holy shit. Only ever lost money (lost $90m in 2023), and they have the gall to say that they're "in the early stages of monetizing [their] business and there is no assurance [they] will be able to scale [the] business for future growth."

Wait omg u did redditgifts back in the day? Respect.

Oh hi! I don't know if you remember me, my name was different, but we met ages ago at SxSW and probably a reddit thing when I did redditgifts with kickme444. I wanted to say hi earlier but I'm awkward like that : )

The weird thing about hanging out with people who aren't extremely online is that they have no point of reference for my entire career. Which is fine. I don't need to talk about it. But I'm pretty sure my BF doesn't even know about redditgifts or that I co-founded 3 companies. Like, at all.

I don’t remember if this was redditgifts or givingifts but it is definitely the best gift I ever got through either. #pokemon

Thank you! This makes me happy 🙂 Redditgifts will always be special to me. It wasn't perfect but it was wildly successful for being based on the concept that people simply enjoy giving and that strangers on the internet could be relied on to follow through- and they mostly did! It was bananas.

This reminds me of redditgifts when the Guinness world record people cc'd an email to 20k redditors and the reply alls went on for days and then occasionally resurfaced for several years to come. Good times!

That sounds amazing. When the redditgifts office was in SLC, we worked with the taffy company there to make rainbow upvote and downvote taffies for the pride parade lol.

Redditgifts was great but the year as head of community at reddit proper was extremely not good lol.

Only redditgifts lol. It as a whole different ecosystem. But, like, the same people so... it as weird. I learned a lot about how people interact in community spaces online lol.

When we did RedditGifts for Teachers, we read every entry to weed out fraud and the wishlists and stories made us all cry. We had so many entries that devs had to help but we were careful who was allowed to because it was so emotionally taxing. Most have no idea how bad it is.
One of the MOST embarrassing things about the US that I don’t think a lot of other countries have picked up on is that it’s normal for teachers to come out of pocket for schoolroom supplies

A fun fact about Spacegoat is that it was drawn by Yishan after we left Reddit and Dan (my ex/redditgifts/etc) both got it 🙂

I agree that old.reddit.com is likely on the chopping block.

I still use it, but they are already slowly breaking it (internally hosted photos jump to the new platform, etc.).

They have a history of fumbling community favorites (scheduled AMAs, RedditGifts), don't have high hopes for post-IPO.

Yeah, that's how I felt for a long time. But then I realized that if they wanted that for even a second, they could have it. So many people here have tried to help. They're genuinely not interested. For me, coming from Redditgifts, that's kind of hard to grasp.

Yes, if you don't mind me making it Saturnalia themed.

I'll submit my secret santa resume
