The family's world was turned upside down when doctors at Monash Children's Hospital suspected leukaemia following blood tests. Amy recalls the devastating moment she realized she could not lose her daughter, stating, 'I cannot lose my daughter.' Within 24 hours, Emilia underwent a bone marrow aspiration under general anaesthetic, and chemotherapy began the following day. Amy, who was 36 weeks pregnant with her second child Maeve, found herself in survival mode, struggling to eat and sleep while trying to protect her unborn child from the stress of the situation. The Redkite charity provided crucial support to the family, including a Red Bag with practical essentials like toiletries, a blanket, a teddy, and a Coles food voucher, along with financial assistance for bills and groceries. Redkite CEO Monique Keighery highlighted that three Australian families hear the words 'your child has cancer' every single day, emphasizing the growing need for support amid Australia's cost-of-living crisis. The charity has supported 2202 families and 3084 individuals across Australia in 2025, a milestone reflecting both the scale of childhood cancer and the increasing financial pressures on families. Coles has been a long-term partner of Redkite since 2013, raising over $57 million, with $33 million coming from bread sales alone. From September 30 to October 27, Coles will double its donation to 10 cents per loaf of bread, with additional donations from participating products. For Amy and her family, this support has meant not having to face childhood cancer alone, allowing Emilia to complete treatment, start school, and become a devoted big sister to Maeve.
