This is one study, and so its results are to be taken with caution. But at the very least it underlines the negative cognitive potential we're dealing with. And so, until much more is known, even if only pragmatically speaking we should #refuseresist

This absolutely stinks. "AI" is being put to increasingly stupid uses, where stupidity is defined as that which characterizes actions that are bad for human well-being (including cognitive) and/or the human ecosystem (planet earth qua habitat).

Capitalism long ago produced the capacity for not only absorbing criticism but transforming it into a self-propagating aspect of itself. genAI does this with ease. I rec'ed AI-critical doc Ghost in the Machine yday, but the fact it too used AIslop in guise of critique was also unwise

It is a cash- and power-grab by the AI firms, since the logical consequence of its functioning is a "doom loop" that will pollute the internet and information network to a level that risks making it, on balance, worse than useless.

None of these actions were or are "inevitable." By continuing to refuse, in every way possible, to adopt genAI tech, what we make more inevitable is the bursting of the bubble and pulling of the plug on what will thereby become an ever more wasteful enterprise.

No longer content with pillaging intellectual work and dismembering our environment (already critically weakened), AI companies are now hellbent on destroying books galore including rare editions.

Shut down these nefarious enterprises already.

If you have retreated to physical books because the internet is too full of AI slop, bad news — now they’re shredding the books to feed their AI slop machines.

He offered a similar excuse last year after posting a picture of a ballot paper defaced with hate speech.
