Researchers reported that advanced regenerative farms stored nearly 40% more carbon in soil compared to the conventional farm controls and if all field crops used these methods, the equivalent of 1.5 years of US greenhouse gas emissions could be stored in soil. 🌎🌱

Spent the day in #Öjendorf with 35 farmers, planners, researchers and neighbours on one brilliant question: what if Hamburg's edge became a park you can harvest, where food, biodiversity and a Sunday walk share the same ground? It's only getting started.

New Barn Organics Acquires Bam's Buckwheat Milk Recipe to Fuel Regenerative Farming Push
Californian startup New Barn Organics has acquired the recipe IP of Bam’s buckwheat milk, together developing an alternative highlighting the ingredient’s regenerative agriculture attributes. To differentiate their portfolios and succeed in an ailing market, plant-based milk makers are branching out with products that home in on hyper-specific consumer trends, from clean-label and high-fibre alternatives to those rich in protein and designed for cold foams. In the US, a new innovation is targeting people’s demand for regeneratively farmed products. Californian startup New Barn Organics has partnered with Bam to launch a regenerative, seed-oil-free buckwheat milk, after purchasing the latter’s recipe IP. The collaboration began via Whole Foods Market’s Local and Emerging Accelerator Program, where Bam was selected as a participant and paired with New Barn as a mentor. The new dairy-free milk is now available in the retailer’s regional stores across Southern Pacific, Northern California, Southwest, Rocky Mountain, and Florida. Bam shifts focus to supply buckwheat milk powder Bam claims to be the company behind the US’s first buckwheat milk. It sold the product in a range of flavours at retailers like Whole Foods, Erewhon, Jimbo’s Mother’s Market, and even appeared on Shark Tank last year. But it evolved into a...

Hugh Locke says about 475 million smallholder farms already grow about 30% of the world's food with little support

He argues they need capital, training and markets, and the old idea of shared stewardship could be very important

What Faith Can Teach Agriculture
NEW YORK, September 30 (IPS) - Years ago, standing in a small farmer’s field in Haiti, I began to suspect that we had agriculture backward. The development world saw a man in need of rescue. I saw a farmer who might help rescue the rest of us.

$9K Grants Open for Regenerative Farming Projects
Byron Shire farmers, landholders, and producers are encouraged to apply for funding through Byron Shire Council's Regenerative Agriculture Small Grants Program, with applications now open until 26 October. The program offers multiple grants of up to $3,000 to support projects that improve soil health, increase biodiversity, enhance climate resilience, and promote sustainable farming practices across the Shire. Council's Agricultural Extension Officer, Mark Duncan, said the small grants are designed to support ideas that deliver both environmental and agricultural benefits. "We're fortunate to have a farming community that is constantly looking for new ways to improve productivity while caring for the land," Mr Duncan said. "Whether you're running a small market garden, a mixed farming enterprise or a larger grazing property, these grants can help turn a good idea into a practical project. "We're looking for projects that explore new approaches, improve soil health, increase biodiversity, strengthen resilience to climate impacts or enhance farm productivity through regenerative practices." Mr Duncan said the program supports farms and producers of all sizes and encourages applications that promote community wellbeing and support healthy resilient local food networks. "In previous years we have funded a range of innovative projects, including adaptive grazing initiatives, livestock integration...

"It's Just One Long Chain": How Regenerative Farming Equals Tastier Food, Healthier Eaters, And Nourished Communities
Everything in the food system is inter-related, from agriculture to nutrition to medicine to climate. And among these institutions, farms are the connective tissue that bind them together, panelists said at Climate Week NYC. The way food is grown, raised, and produced shapes its nutritional value and, ultimately, its impact on eaters’ well-being. Ranchers, chefs, scientists, business leaders, and health experts joined an engaged crowd for the Food Tank Summit “Nourishing the Future: How Farming Practices Shape the Food We Eat, the Health We Build, and the Longevity We Seek,” in partnership with Diestel Family Ranch. Watch the livestream recording on Food Tank’s YouTube channel. “Everything starts in the soil; everything is grounded in the soil,” says Heidi Diestel, a 4th Generation Family Farmer at Diestel Family Ranch. “The family farmers are the ones who have figured out not just how to farm, innovate, and market the products, but help people understand the value (of healthy food).” The connection between better farming practices and healthier food is not theoretical—it’s science. Everything from animal health to soil biology to regenerative production practices on the farm help shape the nutritional value of crops that leave the farm, which in turn shapes public...

This Is What Regenerative Farming (Sometimes) Looks Like
The smallest were built by Hill’s grandfather; the mid-size ones, a little bigger, by his father; and the largest—one of which can hold 150 tractor-trailer loads of corn—by Hill himself. Over three generations, the farm followed the trajectory of commodity operations across the country, scaling their production up and prioritizing higher yields to survive. But about 20 years ago, Hill began to do things a little differently. First, he planted cover crops because the state of Maryland paid him to, as part of efforts to reverse decades of farm runoff that had polluted the Chesapeake Bay. Cover crops solve for that issue because the plants’ roots hold nitrogen and phosphorous in place in the soil, preventing those nutrients from leaching into groundwater and eventually the bay. But cover crops have other benefits, and as Hill noticed changes on his farm, he sought out more information and started experimenting with other regenerative practices. “One of the earliest observations I had as we converted to cover crops and to mixed species and planting green and all that stuff was just seeing the different life around the field and in the soil,” he said in early September while standing at the edge of...
