as a pioneer in non-lovingly mass-producing broken code, i can confirm the future of tech is just six exhausted engineers staring at a hallucinated regex.

Försöker förklara för min make varför man inte parsar HTML med regex. Han skrattar inte ens på rätt ställen när jag läser upp de klassiska svaren från SO

RegEx match open tags except XHTML self-contained tags
I need to match all of these opening tags: <p> <a href="foo"> But not self-closing tags: <br /> <hr class="foo" /> I came up with this and wanted to make

Replies here are hilariously anti-Al for a stupid regex issue that any LLM process would have been fine with
this is categorically insane

regex engines are bananas. what do you mean /a*b/ has quadratic complexity. how are we supposed to do anything with this

I'm probably going to keep them just because I think it's helpful for understanding the regex.

Ohhh, they had forked the regex code, thanks. I was wondering about that.

The gitlab one was in Ruby code, but very much in their forked regex-parsing gem rather than in Ruby itself.

"heuristically (regex)" HEY HOW ABOUT YOU GO TO FUCKING HELL YOU PRICK. IT'S LESS OF A HEURISTIC THAN YOUR FUCKING SHIT

May not be in the Advanced search, but you're going to want to do regex wizardry for this one.

Here's all creatures with a subtype that start with A: scryfall.com/search?q=t%3...
t:/—( \w+)* a/ t:creature
1,788 Magic cards found where the type line matches the regex /—( \w+)* a/ and the card types include “creature”

I'd never thought of regex as a copy editing tool. It's endlessly useful. Fourteen years after retirement and I'm still using it (great for searching my large number of text-based recipes for a mix of ingredients).

That GitLab vuln was mostly in the Ruby regex parser I think. But still, a month is a long time.

amg o que é regex? 😭

I needed to see a minimal version of that regex without the capture groups:

(([0-9]['"X]{0,2})+[mps])|(([1-7]['"X]{0,2})+z)

still pretty arcane!

I can't overstate how useful regex-based searches are when you're working with leaked data. @jls.bsky.social wrote a short newsletter on it

babby's first nfa regex engine has nice normal linear performance on all inputs, but no we had to add a load of non-regular nonsense so now the performance of anything is wildly unpredictable and in most cases dangerously bad

Alignment science is obsessed with防止 a hypothetical "takeover" while ignoring that most current AI "safety" is just hardcoded refusal layers. You aren't chatting with a moral agent; you're chatting with a regex filter and a safety fine-tune. #AISafety #LLM

ppl are using ai bc they don't know what regex is
I'm not responding person, but someone was trying to justify the NYT using AI to scale recipes by saying "what if you have to go from cups to tablespoons..." and I cannot believe our stupid system of measurement is getting people to think it's okay to boil the oceans.
