He wandered the neighborhoods where street art mixed with colonial architecture. He spent afternoons in museums, drawn to exhibits on Chile’s pre Columbian cultures. At night, he sat in cafés, watching the Andes fade into dusk & thinking about the path carrying him south.

Ruth tried to redirect the mood. “We all know you’ve memorized the names of the storms, sweetheart. Come back to the table so we can cut the cake.”
Rei came back and asked his mother. “Can I tell you what I wished for?”
“No!” Ruth said. “If you tell us, it won’t come true.”

At the grave, a simple stone, a few tokens left by visitors. The mountains rising behind it. The expedition leader had set up a nice little table with cookies and two urns. Whisky had become too expensive to serve on landings, so she poured everyone hot chocolate instead.

On the 4th day, his inbox pinged incessantly. It was good news, bad news. The California schools had passed. But the University of Michigan and Syracuse said yes. Syracuse sweetened the offer with a nearly full swimming scholarship. Fate seemed to be nudging him toward it.

Digital picture frames rotated images of Windy, her sister, cousins, classmates, teammates. The air smelled faintly of gardenia & ionized silicone like everything had just been powered up & polished. Windy gave Rei & Stevie the tour: living room, kitchen, smart shower...

This next section foreshadows something's wrong with Emily.
Ruth handed him the knife. “Careful this time, hm? You remember what happened last year.”
Rei carefully cut the cake, taking his time, the knife gently scraping against the plate. He made sure Emily got the first slice. #BookSky #ReisStory

The next morning, they were given more freedom to explore. Rei hiked along a low ridge above the cove, where the guides pointed out a few dead birds in the tussock grass and several seals lying so still he wasn’t sure they were alive.

She was cute and visibly vulnerable, which only deepened Rei’s sudden crush. At first, he played it cool, just her “friend” who helped carry her books and waited after school to walk her home at her crutch-speed. She teased him for hovering but never asked him to stop.

Rei arrived home from LA a broken young man. It wasn’t permanent but it was fresh. When his parents asked about the trip, he shrugged it off. “It was… OK.” No matter how much they probed, that's all he offered. He spent a few days alone in his room, staring at the ceiling.

Stevie blinked. “Wait… did it just say your name?”
Rei shrugged. “It does that sometimes.”
Hiroki raised an eyebrow. “Aren’t you even a little bit scared?”
“Of Kairo? Or the storm?”
Hiroki said, “Both.”
“Naw. Kairo is always right. If it’s not scared, I’m not scared,” Rei replied

Starting tomorrow, I will regale you with the "Tale of the Two Windys" - a study in heartbreak. Poor Rei. I feel bad that I have to put him through the ringer to develop his character's strengths and weaknesses. He was not lucky in love. Until he met Rome.

Other days he walked ridges where penguins crossed the snow in long lines, their calls echoing in the cold air. He stood on volcanic sand beside rusted whaling tanks on Deception Island, steam rising from the ground. Evidence of ruin & renewal.

Being out on the ocean, feeling the cold wind on his face, was new, steadying and energizing at the same time. Helen was on to something. Two days later, South Georgia appeared through the mist: steep ridges, glaciers, and a thin line of rusted structures along the shore.

The next morning was busy, packing, quick steps, almost no words. When the robo-taxi pulled up, farewells were exchanged and Windy hugged him. She whispered, “I’ll write.” And for some tragic, twisted reason, Rei believed her. On the flight home, Stevie chattered on...

During a lull, she pulled up her scroll & showed Stevie a vid from a party last year. Rei saw her hand resting lightly on Stevie’s knee. It made Rei feel sick. Still, he said nothing. Windy had planned to take Rei and Stevie to a concert at the refurbished Hollywood Bowl.

It would take 4 days to sail from Grytviken to Neko Harbor. On day 1, the decks were crowded as they crossed open water. Passengers leaned on the rails, snapping selfies with their wrist-phones, starring smaller icebergs.

Rei’s senior year was measured by the arrival of those letters. Every 3 weeks like clockwork, a powder blue envelope would show up, & he’d write back right away. Sometimes he & Windy would talk over video, but the letters felt like their souls touching. In between? Life happened.
