For #ReliefWednesday, the Saturnia Tellus relief from the Ara Pacis, #Rome.
It depicts Mother Earth, or, according to a different interpretation, Venus, divine mother of Aeneas and progenitor of the Gens Iulia, to which Augustus himself belongs.

This is the Ludovisi sarcophagus (mid-3rd AD). It absolutely writhes, hums and bursts with energy and movement. It reminds me of Tacitus’ famous phrase about the Romans: “they create a wasteland & call it peace.”

This relief is from the Tomb of the Haterii in Rome, built for Quintus Haterius & Hateria his wife. They seem to have made their fortune in construction.

Here we see a crane powered by slaves in a wheel putting the finishing touches to a temple-like sepulchre.
