LA quietly stopped repaving all streets last July to avoid fulfilling its ADA obligations. The federal govt says when you repave a street, you have to update all the curb ramps. LA has tons of out of date curb ramps, so the rule makes repaving much more expensive. The city's solution: stop repaving!

Wow, even crazier: Melrose is supposed to get a protected bike lane after voters required it by law with Measure HLA.

Apparently to avoid ADA & #MeasureHLA, L.A. City is now only repaving streets without sidewalks. This means the city is repaving streets in well-off neighborhoods, even many blocks where the pavement is already in good shape & doesn't need to be repaved. la.streetsblog.org/2026/06/04/l...
I feel like all the roads for 10 miles around the base need to be shut down for repaving.

L.A. is repaving the wrong streets! (part 1) Recently the city stopped repaving all kinds of streets, and instead almost entirely focuses on streets without sidewalks - which are mostly in suburban, well-off, and hilly areas.

To be blunt, repaving highways by putting Washington $3 billion in debt rather than raising taxes on the wealthy is irresponsible.
To be blunt, the state has neglected its core transportation infrastructure for too long.
Today, I announced that I'm proposing $2.1 billion, the largest investment in 2 decades, for preservation and maintenance of our roads and bridges. This is being done without raising taxes.

Doesn’t installing speed humps / cushions usually involve repaving? That’s the justification that’s been given for repaving astral even though it was in acceptable shape.

it’s just sort of straightforwardly true that doing this type of repaving without any safety improvements on one of the city’s deadliest streets is incompatible with vision zero

I guess I was under the mistaken impression that they would be using some of the (many millions?) spent on this repaving the streets of DC?
I don’t think the streets of DC were designed for IndyCar races.

This is actually on the table with this transportation levy, which includes repaving funds for Rainier between Little Saigon and Mount Baker.
Actually, let's dream bigger. Reduce Rainier to 1 car lane, 1 bus-only lane, build protected bike lanes and make all the I-90 on and off-ramps BUS ONLY. We're investing $$$ in the cross-lake rail network, let's make sure we get the mode shift to pay for it.
Lane removal now. There’s no reason Rainier should be six lanes wide here with 2 foot sidewalks squeezed right up against the car lanes so you have to duck mirrors of passing trucks.

Bus stop consolidation was what got included in the Denny Way repaving plan when bus lanes were ruled to be an impossible ask.
100% this. I doubt any transit rider is actually for bus stop consolidation if you asked " do you want to eliminate your bus stop to improve route efficiency?"
I'm having a moment with transit bros.
Have you tried walking to a bus stop with a toddler? Every foot counts, and stop consolidation doesn't work for so many of us.
Talk to someone who uses a wheelchair about the rain. Or a walker on broken sidewalks. Your 3 min faster bus leaves us out.
