"we're reshoring domestic manufacturing"

beginnings of a recognition of the scale of the catastrophe they've created for their own core policy of reshoring industrial factories. still deputy secy of state mcrandoson probably wont cut it.
US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau expressed regret on Sunday over the recent detention of hundreds of South Korean workers in Georgia and said those who returned home will face no disadvantage when re-entering the US

reshoring American hands?

Are we reshoring dolls?
Trump: "Part of the problem w/ Harvard is there are about 31% of foreigners coming to Harvard...but they refuse to tell us who the people are...it shouldn't be 31%. It's too much. Bc we have Americans who want to go there...we want a list of those students...I assume with Harvard many will be bad"

Despite Trump’s talk about reshoring manufacturing, there are now 59,000 fewer manufacturing jobs than there were in April when Trump promised to boost US manufacturing.

CNBC: “.. Nearly three-quarters of those surveyed (74%) said cost was the top reason for saying they would not be reshoring production ..”

Completely destroys the argument of reshoring production too, when you exempt high tech products but have huge tariffs on cheap consumer goods, raw materials and agriculture.
April 12, 2025 at 1:35 PM
Nothing says "reshoring supply chains to rebuild manufacturing" like putting tariffs on raw materials and exempting finished products

* Expensive building materials because of tariffs.

* Lack of qualified labor.

“.. why it’s so hard to orchestrate a broader reshoring of factory work to the US.”

all of the talk of “reshoring (low end) manufacturing” and “bringing back the american worker” is a smokescreen for a plan to impoverish as many americans by forcing as many of them as possible into backbreaking, low wage labor. it’s discipline for an unruly populace.

“.. So much for reshoring. Ford Motor Co. is said to plan a $370 million investment in India to churn out new engines as the US carmaker resuscitates a factory it shut down four years ago.”

Thus, I don't think reshoring garment manufacturing is a way forward to building an American middle-class. The costs—xenophobia, nationalism, protectionism—are also too high.

So how *can* we support US garment manufacturing?

"So it's not that they won't be subject to tariffs geared at reshoring, they'll just be under a different regime. It's shifting from one bucket of tariffs to a different bucket of potential tariffs." -U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer on the electronics tariffs

“.. ‘For a president who is intent on building U.S. manufacturing, the tariff strategy he’s laid out is remarkably short-sighted. .. Even if you’re intent on reshoring parts of manufacturing, you can’t do it all. Steel and aluminum are part of that.”

Punitive tariffs to forcibly "reshore" manufacturing, while also cutting off the funding for innovations that would help with that reshoring. Brilliant.
Some admin priorities across directorates:
Advanced Manufacturing: -64.6%
Artificial Intelligence: +3.1%
Biotechnology: -29.7%
Microelectronics and Semiconductors: -53.9%
Quantum Information Science" +0.4%
National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI): -63.8%
Clean Energy Technology: -99.2%

GOLDMAN: “.. tariffs are unlikely to result in much reshoring because production costs for alternative suppliers of US imports are well below the US’s for most products.

“.. higher tariffs will likely raise equipment costs and discourage investment,” and “weigh on US real income by 1½-2% ..”

it's funny that they want to do claims about how tariffs are for deals but also for reshoring
April 5, 2025 at 2:53 AM
It now appears that where we're going to end up on tariffs is that they will be high enough to cause serious price increases for consumers, but not high or targeted enough to spur meaningful reshoring of manufacturing.

A perfect lose-lose for everyone.
