CLI-over-API varies by Cisco platform:

• IOS-XE: CLI RPC (config commands, works over NETCONF/RESTCONF/gRPC)
• NX-OS: NX-API CLI (show + config, JSON output)
• IOS-XR: gNMI with ASCII encoding

Different transports, same idea.

Most CCIE Automation study plans are backwards.

Start Ansible/Terraform → can't debug exam failures.

Right order:
1. Raw ncclient + NETCONF
2. RESTCONF
3. Ansible modules
4. Terraform

You can't debug what you don't understand.

I'm still busy coding in my RESTCONF lab. The attached shows the topology of the lab I'm working on. Also shown is some code in "vs code". You can use a Linux node within CML or vs code in Windows to fiddle with your RESTCONF code.

Don't get me wrong, I do not see any reason for you to implement Restconf. May point would just be that the code someone wrote for a Restconf interface will not work without adaptation on json-rpc. From the feature prospective json-rpc is definitely a superset.

The goal is automating the verification of the encryption algorithm on an active #IPSec tunnel.

I'm diving back into programming these days. Here is the JSON output of RESTCONF on a cisco CSR1000v. Network programmability would have to be the most technical thing in Network Engineering. It requires knowledge of Cisco IOS, Linux and Python.
