In addition to the retraumatization and institutional betrayal survivors face from cops and courts (and often the media, too), survivors can also face being jailed, charged, surveilled, abused, harassed, and more when they report being victimized to cops. It happens a lot, more than people think.

Avoiding retraumatization might sound like a no-brainer for survivors in recovery, but we can be notoriously bad at realizing things that might predictably retrauamatize us until we're in the thick of it. No shame, it happens-- just pay attention & make adjustments going forward.

This is what retraumatization looks like. Endless delays, drip-fed files, no closure. Survivors are forced to relive the harm while institutions stall, deflect and protect themselves. Justice delayed isn’t neutral, it’s violent.

When the conflicts were originally building, I made clear I had some sympathies to both "sides" of it.
I tried to use that to encourage a different way of handling all this, one that would minimize people getting hurt, minimize retraumatization.

If you assume that someone isn't traumatized and lacks the "permission" to make something you think is problematic, that is constructing a situation where survivors are inevitably forced to out their traumas or go through retraumatization. trauma policing hurts everyone, but especially survivors.
I think we could do with a little less "Don't worry, I'm allowed to make this art because I'm traumatized in these ways." and a lot more "Don't worry, I'm allowed to make this art because I'm allowed to make any art. And also, it's none of your fucking business whether or not I am traumatized."

seeing what has been done to Talia, Aria, Bee, etc is honestly very retraumatizing because of how closely it matches what happened to me and my friends. i imagine others are also experiencing this retraumatization.
