I quickly get tired of certain cycles of #ttrpg discourse, so I keep an important trick in my back pocket: When I get bored of a conversation I casually refer to a popular PBTA game as an "Apocalypse World module" and suddenly we're having a very different but equally vigorous conversation.

I am absolutely, on reading this, now thinking of a Fiasco/Retroclone mechanics crossover about a crew of Always Sunny assholes clearing dungeons and getting into arguments about loot they will always lose anyway
A real tragedy of mainstream ttrpgs is that playing effectively coincides with characters functioning supertextually in sync, which usually does not make for interesting storytelling.

Hell, just buy old D&D books secondhand if you’re that gung-ho on sticking to that particular game. 2nd and 3.5 were the best editions anyway.

I understand why the indie retroclone zeitgeist seems to have skipped directly from the NES to the PS1, but I'm still holding out hope that somewhere out there is a developer whose life's ambition is to create a version of "Super Adventure Island II" that doesn't suck.

Lore, my Lord of the Rings retroclone RPG, is totally free (of course! it's a fan work!). But have you checked out the Resources section? I think it's a really valuable curation of other free resources to give your game a Tolkienesque vibe.
