My interpretation of Vesta's south pole impact that formed Rheasilvia crater. Before impact older Veneneia crater can be seen.

Olympus Mons en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olympus...
It is Mars's tallest volcano, its tallest planetary mountain, and is approximately tied with Rheasilvia on Vesta as the tallest mountain currently discovered in the Solar System.

Rheasilvia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rheasil...
The mean is affected by the crater itself. It is 89% the mean equatorial diameter of 569 km (354 mi), making it one of the largest craters in the Solar System, and at 75°S latitude, covers most of the southern hemisphere.

TIL, except maybe, depending on how you measure it, Rheasilvia.

Year of Space Facts: Week 19/52 🔭🧪🛰️

Earth's Mauna Kea, at 10.2 km, does not even break into the top 5 tallest (base-to-peak) mountains in the solar system:

5. Ascraeus Mons 15 km
4. South Boösaule Mons 17 km
3. Iapetus Equatorial Ridge 20 km
2. Rheasilvia central peak 23 km
1. Olympus Mons 26 km 🏆

Olympus Mons is only debatably the tallest mountain in our solar system. Rheasilvia is an impact crater on the minor planet 4 Vesta, and the mountain at the center of the crater is technically taller!

Your day is governed by the eight of pentacles, the Rheasilvia crater of Vesta, and periwinkles.

Your lucky vegetable is okra.
Your lucky colour code is #EE121D.
Your lucky sound is lowing.

Do not go to a tanning salon today unless you are wearing a linen shirt.

The impact that created the Rheasilvia crater excavated about 1% of Vesta's volume, ejecting it into space and likely forming the Vestoid family of asteroids.

#ThroughTheCracks: Olympus Mons on Mars is one of the tallest mountains in the Solar System (approximately tied with Rheasilvia on Vesta, apparently). Will the story take us there? Only if it takes us to the Mars colony, which it probably won't. Maybe in a sequel, if I give it a sequel? (2/2)

Vesta stands alone as a revolutionary project, an asteroid amid the inky black. In the canyon of Rheasilvia, the Council plots and backstabs, dreaming of the power to forge the unfinished nation into polished steel. Yet Corporate looms, ready to shatter the dream into molten slag.

Só hoje descobri que o pico Rheasilvia no asteroide/protoplaneta Vesta é comparável em altura ao Monte Olimpo em Marte.

This is the ACTUAL tallest mountain in our Solar System and it's a peak in the middle of a crater called Rheasilvia. From base to peak it is taller than the Olympus Mons. Pictured is the protoplanet it resides on, Vesta.

So where do we go to find a mountain in our solar system taller and more challenging than Everest? Rheasilvia on Vesta?

A mountain to rival Olympus Mons, on an asteroid

Rheasilvia's central peak rises about 22 km — on Vesta, a body just 500 km across. Fly it as Dawn measured it.

I am neither a geologist nor a stone tool maker, so I wouldn't know.

I know from attending talks that the resulting crater - Rheasilvia - is huge, and Vesta was / is solid enough (i.e., small enough) that the body left it more or less as it was.

Rheasilvia, located on the asteroid Vesta, is a mountain believed to be between 12.4 to 15.5 miles tall. This places it in close competition with Olympus Mons for the title of the solar system’s tallest mountain. It also happens to be a Falcons fan. #AtlantaFalcons #Falcons #NFL #SpaceFacts

Some close up detail shots of my PK-237 Life Support Unit and accompanying TK-1 vacuum helmet, as seen in The Expanse. I built both of these as part of a cosplay last year in the span of about 3 weeks for Neotropolis 2023 and have been tinkering with them ever since!

I love using the small details of a costume to tell a story about a character, even if when they go unnoticed to others. This character is a Belter pirate from Rheasilvia on the asteroid Vesta, who spends his scrip on bootleg Blackhole System merchandise - his favorite zergmetal band in the belt.
