Not a fish or a dragon scale, but a single cell of a #protistsonsky. This rhizarian testate amoeba creates perfect tiny glass scales to build it's shell. From a peat bog. #protistaday.

Look at me! I'm a rhizarian doing amoeba-stuff inside my spiky/scaly glass house. #protistsonsky

Hey little rhizarian glass-scale-shelled amoeba, where's your nucleus? Oh, it's exactly where it looks like it should be? Cool! #bogmonster #protistsonsky

This is an Alveolate from the Harosan kingdom. Harosans include brown & yellow algae like kelp & diatoms, mycelial oomycetes, dinoflagellates, ciliates, & rhizarian bony amoebas among others. A surprising number of these non-plant non-animal non-fungi critters are multicellular & macroscopic.

The rhizarian testate amoeba Euglypha rotunda eats its co-cultured bacteria, but it will also chow down on GFP E. coli. One day I'll use these vids to measure digestion rates. @thealgaeman.bsky.social another answer to what they eat! #protistaday #protistsonsky

A shell within a shell. The arcellinid amoeba Cyclopyxis pirini builds its test out of found materials. This one incorporated a rhizarian shelled amoeba from the other side of the eukaryote tree, Scutiglypha crenulata (=Euglypha acanthophora?).

Ciliates are on the Alveolate branch of the Harosan kingdom. Some are multicellular: septated or on a common stalk. They are closely related to dinoflagellates (incl. symbionts of coral & jellies), & then to diatoms & giant kelp, & then to rhizarian amoebas, some of which get even larger.

The rhizarian testate amoeba that I shared yesterday makes its shell out of intricate, self-constructed glass scales. Other testate amoebozoans in the same environment make their shells out of debris (left) or food (right). These are interesting examples of convergence! #protistsonsky #protistaday

These critters make their houses out of strontium sulfate, and I don't think any other organism does this. They are rhizarian amoebas that are more closely related to kelp & then to plants than to animals & fungi.

An archaeon becomes a eukaryote by swallowing a bacterium, becomes a plant by swallowing a cyanobacterium, & becomes a plastid when swallowed by a dinoflagellate. The dinoflagellate then gets swallowed by a collodarian, a multicellular jelly tube made of rhizarian amoebas

These are rhizarians, in the Harosan Kingdom! They are closely related to collodarian jelly tubes & gromiids, then kelp & diatoms.

Unlike discoban & amoebozoan amoebas, rhizarian amoebas have microtubules in their pseudopods. This is also true of the few harosan amoebas found outside Rhizaria.
