A découvrir :
Animal, Vegetable, Lamb: The Zoophyte from Tartary
In the Middle Ages, rumours spread across Europe of a strange hybrid creature, half-animal, half-plant, known as the Vegetable Lamb of Tartary. A hoax based on fern rhizomes? A euphemism for culled fe...

Exam tip: Link the structure to its effect.

Q. Explain how rhizomes help a weed to spread.

One mark for the point, one for developing it. Most dropped marks come from stopping after the point.

If anyone needs me, I’m digging up iris rhizomes in the backyard 😑

Native plants 🌱 usually have lower maintenance - a low spot begs for plants with deep roots to improve drainage. The bulbs & rhizomes may not thrive in soil that is perpetually wet.

FIGHTING! 💪 YOU GOT THIS!!

Omg he’s so cute, good luck!!!! Be careful not to water him too much, snake plants have rhizomes (tubers, potato like things) underground that store water, so he’ll be fine for ages!!

The one with the tendrils is a Euphorbia Inermis, and the other guy is a Euphorbia bupleurifolia!

Truth-spice is a widespread tree, mostly prized for its culinary value. It is native to wet lakes. Interestingly, it is symbiotic with another plant.
Its rhizomes, when burned as incense, will strengthen the heart.
Unfortunately, a special set of tools is needed for harvesting.

I really want to plant bamboo along one side of the property line, but am waiting till I can afford raised concrete beds that will resist rhizomes.
best to put it in a pot

He was angry with me

I could have dropped a dime and snitched, but thought I’d let him fix it without attracting negative attention from plant-hater landlord 😂

Jeesh! I think I did the right thing, but I got grief for it

It’s all so exhausting, isn’t it?

I was writing about COMPOST as a theological method for doing constructive theology. I had not encountered Deleuze at all, but I knew what I was doing did not fit within the confines of the thesis-antithesis-synthesis framework. I was writing about rhizomes, fungi, and lichen as useful metaphors

Is bamboo fuel really $2.75 a gallon? We checked. MISSING CONTEXT. The figures are real, but both are projections: $2.75 assumes mature commercial scale, and the 26x gap is a life-cycle estimate crediting carbon stored in bamboo's rhizomes.
October 29, 2026 at 9:12 PM
REALLY?! We checked. The WPI study is real, but $2.75 is a modeled price "under mature commercial-scale conditions," and the 26x emissions gap is a life-cycle estimate crediting carbon stored in bamboo's rhizomes. Verdict: MISSING CONTEXT. Details in WPI's own write-up.

Bahiagrass rhizomes/ underground stems are really dense, so they basically squeeze out anything else you're trying to grow from seed. Pulling them out really hurts my hands, but I don't want to use a power tool because I keep finding snakes and other things in there

the Amate-cehuatl-xihuitl-pitli is fascinating as a piece of herbalism history and also for how it differs from European traditions. my latin is fragmentary but the plants are depicted entire, with roots, tubers, rhizomes, and soil type, and sometimes presence of ants in the soil, as identifiers.
October 26, 2026 at 5:41 PM
There is certainly a power tool of some kind I could rent to chop up bahiagrass rhizomes faster than yanking them with my hands, but then I might hurt some of the two billion thingies trying to hibernate in there, including five entire glubbies just today

292. The dividing line between plants and animals is not always obvious. Challenging circumstances for a vegetarian?

Fighting bahiagrass and its dense rhizomes by hand sounds like quite the workout, especially when you are watching out for seedlings.

This ginger sprout is already growing tiny rhizomes

PSA: don't plant grocery store ginger rhizomes in your garden--pathogens are being moved around this way.

Moved some bulbs and whatever those iris things are called (rhizomes?) planted some new moss in my moss garden, painted a sundial and sewed a denim bag for flax seed. Nap or snack time, can't decide.
