“My God, how could you?” he said. “You’ve seen two million movies.”

Gene Shalit made it to 100. He embraced a level of goofiness with his onscreen persona that really set him apart of other critics, and taught critics like me that you didn't have to be stuffy or puff yourself up to be a critic—you could just be an entertaining version of yourself. Rest in peace.

After a large NYC downpour, I was soaking wet heading to work at One Rock & ran right into Gene Shalit. I apologized profusely & he said with a crazy smile “It’s all ok! It’s all going to be ok! You go in there and have a great day. Ok?” Sweet man.
He stood out from the TV pack with his bowties, bushy eyebrows and movie reviews studded with cheeky turns of phrase.
