ALPHA GANG. It’s like a Wes Anderson movie as if directed by Quentin Dupieux that turns into a Peckinpah movie. Tonally BONKERS and NOT for everyone. But it was for me. By the time the Nietzer Ebb needle drop happens, I was in love. Full of heart and culty weirdness. Gonna be divisive, but great.

GODMOTHER. Rad desert folk horror. Riley Dandy shines as a hot mess you would absolutely let ruin your life. And Bruce Davison and Dee Wallace give absolutely unhinged performances. A must see for folk horror fans.

This has been the best Fantastic Fest in years. So many great films. I’ve already seen 3 of my favorite movies of the year and we still have four days left to go!
Watching all these movies with Jess and 2000 of my closest friends is always my favorite week of the year, but this year is special.

PATHETIC FALLACY is Adam Egypt Mortimer’s best film by a country mile. It’s got a Panos Cosmatos look and feel, but a huge emotional heart that wrecked me. Kid Cudi is amazing as the lead and editing by @veradrew22.bsky.social gives it a dreamy unearthly feel. A great fucking movie. LOVED IT!

A PRAYER FOR THE DYING. Bleak, depressing, heartbreaking, and possibly the best representation of what it is to be a husband I’ve ever seen. Incredible performances. Expect this to play the Cinematech’s Bleak Week every five years or so. A great heartbreaker.

RIVER. All the buzz is right. A stripped down, gnarly slasher that delivers everything promised on the label. A family gets stranded on a river and gets chased by a mask wearing maniac. Beautifully shot, very well acted, tense, terrifying, and fun! Just fucking great.

I have stayed silent for too long. I think Crystal Lake is a bad camp and people should stop sending their kids there. Enough is enough. I hope people read this and take this seriously and don’t ignore the warning signs like I did. Bad stuff keeps happening there.

In July, we found out that Rick Pour of Bearded Skulls MUFX suddenly passed away.
On Nov. 1st, there will be a memorial for Rick Pour here in Wilmington, NC, as well as a fundraiser to help raise awareness of how rampant mental health issues are in the arts. Please share.
