So sad to see the water run off from roads and fields polluting the Vale Brook which flows into the River Chess in Chesham. Yes, that clear water above is what a chalk stream looks like, the rest is pollution.

In case you missed it, catch @PJennings88 from @RiverChess on https://talkradio.co.uk/radio/listen-again/1571832000

Select the 1430-1500 link and go about 19.00 in. Nice work, Paul!!

Tipping it down again out there today. Funny, summer bursts of rain used to make me really happy, thinking of the dry streams filling up. A little knowledge changes one's perspective. Now I just think of all the overflow sewage getting pumped into my local @RiverChess

My old mate @ShaneSzarkowski came to #Chesham! Gotta show the sights... #RiverChess #chalkstreams #industrialArchaeology @queenschesh
And we saw a trout!

Exciting times!! This just came through the letterbox! Excvated in the last century, this site is one I visit often on the #RiverChess and plays a major part in understanding the later prehistoric and Roman phases of human settlement in the Chess Valley

And this must be near as dammit the 100th 💩💩 dump this calendar year in my local river 🤬

Huzzah for free draining soils... The trench is mercifully not filled with water. I admit when I set out in torrential rain this morning, a waterlogged trench was my *second* concern.
Knowing that the rain means more sewage into #RiverChess was the first thing to mind 😓💩

Well, lovely to come out of my flat and see this slick well on its way to join #RiverChess
😓

Mmmm tasty bit of something coming down the #RiverChess this morning.

Great to see @ChilternsAONB here
#RiverMisbourne & #RiverChess get a nice shout-out for their walks & the indefatigable @willisbushcraft also clearly impressed.

#HillfortsWednesday site visit to Cholesbury Camp, a plateau hillfort at the top of the #RiverChess catchment. Currently on the 'At Risk' register for the threat of shallow rooted tree cover damaging the earthworks. We will be working towards a solution in the next months.

Some good news to wake to, even as the current rainfall makes me worry about Storm Overflow sewage releases in my local #RiverChess 😭🌧️💩

#MosaicMonday #RiverChess edition!
These specimens appeared in Keith Branigan's excavations of the two-phase Roman villa at Latimer, where the lovely folks @Restore_Hope_ now do a lot of great work for the community.
Thoroughly reccomend Branigan's book, from whence I nicked pic

Is it exciting aerial imagery of a river delta or dendritic estuary?

Oh, wait, no - it's one of a dozen examples I walked past on one of #Chesham's roads - all that sediment isnt bringing fertility to a floodplain, it's bringing toxicity to the drains for #RiverChess

Great talk now from @ChilternsAONB /@QMUL Dr Kate Hepple and @thameswater Helena Soteriou on the TW Smarter Water Catchment initiative, and all the great work being done by @Chilternstreams @ChilternSociety @RiverChess for enhancing and improving #RiverChess
Lots of data!!😁

Doing some much needed river work on #RiverChess to clear willow overgrowth. Lovely to be outdoors in the river, but I'm a bit dismayed by the lack of mayfly. 😞

Lovely demoiselles were out in full force today on #RiverChess
November 23, 2024 at 10:37 AM
#RiverChess looking very very dry @queenschesh ☹️
I hope we are not headed to 2019 again, where I saw thick terrestrial grasses growing here.
November 23, 2024 at 9:10 AM
I went online to check levels for #RiverDove and #RiverManifold because I was supposed to be enjoying my @WildTroutTrust auction win there this week, but there's not much water.#drought Thought I'd check on my local #chalkstream #RiverChess too. 37cm seems a bit optimistic 🤔
November 23, 2024 at 9:10 AM
#RiverChess is nearly dry @queenschesh
I stood in terrestrial grass here in October 2019. Will it be this way again this year?
It's part climate change, part abstraction, all VERY worrying.
All @ChilternsAONB streams need your help - follow @Chilternstreams to find out how!

This is why we can't have nice things. Walking to the gym I just saw these guys shovelling detritus and tossing rubble and scrap into the water below.
@myLondis this isn't how to treat the @RiverChess even if it looks like a stagnant pool in this associated waterbody. 😕

Out with @Chilternstreams @thameswater Smarter Water Catchment coordinator reviewing some existing and historical ponds in the #RiverChess upper catchment area.
This one is more weed than water!

A few weeks ago I was honoured with a peek at part of the remains from Latimer villa on the #RiverChess. A brief glimpse into what must have been a wonderful settlement in the 3rd/4th century.

Out working on the ⁦‪RiverChess‬⁩ this last weekend. We saw loads of water vole signs including their droppings. Also an opportunity to spot the difference between rat and water vole droppings. Rat is the longer one. @chilternstreams.bsky.social
