Between the earthquake/tsuanmi scare, the UnitedHealthcare shooting and the South Korea martial law stuff this week, it feels like Bluesky is getting more and more critical mass around breaking events that made Twitter so sticky and useful.

Hello to the new followers and folks here. I'm a tech reporter for the NYT. It's going to be an interesting time to report on tech, and more specifically Elon Musk as he extends his power into the White House.

If you work or have worked for him and want to reach me, hit me up on Signal at rmac.18.

I'm old enough to remember that after the Cambridge Analytica scandal, Facebook started doing "privacy popups" in 2018 where they told people that they cared about their privacy and user consent.

Well, lmao.

the last time a travel ban happened at the start of a trump admin

I tweeted this eight years ago as many Silicon Valley leaders openly protested Donald Trump's ban of people from Muslim-majority countries.

Some of these same leaders celebrated Trump at his recent inauguration.

Phrased better than I could.
Deepfake porn and nonconsensual imagery is not a new problem in AI. It was arguably one of the first major concerns for generative AI companies. X and xAI have faced previous instances of celeb deepfakes on their properties.

To allow this stuff now is a choice.

On Twitter Blue launch day in Nov '22, an engineer asked Elon Musk what would need to happen for them to roll back a plan to sell users verified badges.

"If there’s like death or serious injury or something like that," Musk said.

How Elon Musk Got Tangled Up in Blue
Twitter Blue, a revamped subscription service that let users buy verified badges, was the first big test for the platform’s new owner. It didn’t go well.

This is the other time I've seen

bsky.app/profile/rmac...
While little of what Musk does these days surprises me, this post amid his daily deluge is something I've never seen before. He boosts a post arguing that women do not have the capacity for critical thought, and therefore cannot be the best leaders for a democracy.

Feels like a mask off moment.

We spent a while reporting on Davis's past and what motivates him on cost-cutting.

One noteworthy anecdote: Davis was so obsessed with cost-cutting that he removed key parts from SpaceX's Falcon 1 rocket, directly causing its failure on its second ever test flight.

Anyone curious about the difference in pouch sizes on RMAC boxer briefs? Also, how does their seamless compare to As We Move?

Honestly would have been more appropriate for Zuckerberg to have made his announcement yesterday so it was on the anniversary of an event his social media platforms helped foment.

Hah! Super relevant to this topic:

This is the supreme irony of the MAGA schism over H-1Bs. Many workers who stayed at Twitter after Musk’s takeover did so because their status in the US was contingent on their employment. They kept a site running that was then used by MAGA folks to question why they were here in the first place.

Day One: Patrick Soon-Shiong’s new AI bothsides the KKK in comments on a @gustavoarellano.bsky.social piece. bsky.app/profile/rmac...
Earlier today the LA Times had AI-generated counterpoints to a column from @gustavoarellano.bsky.social. His piece argued that Anaheim, the city he grew up in, should not forget its KKK past.

The AI "well, actually"-ed the KKK. It has since been taken off the piece.

The return to this kind of unfiltered homophobia is also really jarring.

Tfw the ball is about to drop, the candidate you backed is about to take the White House, and you’re on the path to being richer than ever, but you still need to get one last slur in.

Here is what her mother posted about me on X before deleting it. I'm still not really clear what was meant by it.

But this was her reaction when she made assumptions about my reporting.

bsky.app/profile/rmac...
I report to scrutinize power, and Musk has not taken favorably to that.

Here is his own mother bringing up my race yesterday on X simply because I was reporting on her son.

I can take critiques of my work. But I won't stand for whatever this is. And I definitely won't let it distract from my job.
