Also, a corollary: the players should know that there are no "wrong" choices - their decisions affect what follows, but no matter what, the game will go on.

This frees up the players to choose the paths they think will be the most fun rather than worrying about "doing it right".

RPG tip: Don't offer options you don't want the players to choose.

Busted out some Scum & Villainy with family tonight for our traditional vacation rpg.

Going great - starting off your very first job with an engagement roll of 3 makes for some fun times. 😆

You ever have an NPC tell the PCs “don’t do this thing” EXPECTING the PCs to totally ignore said NPC, but then instead they just…obey them? #RPGchat #ttrpgs

From tonight’s #d&d game: who called them “sending stones” and not “rocky-talkies”? #ttrpgs #rpgchat

This is solid advice. Always filter what your NPCs do through the lens of “what will be the most fun”. There’s always an option that makes *enough* sense and doesn’t suck.

RPG tip from the archive: What the villains would reasonably do may not be what's most fun for the group. Just as "that's what my character would do" is a BS excuse for players, "that's what my villains would do" iSs a B excuse for DMs. A bad time is a bad time.

This weekend's #dnd game was a good one - finally resolved a significant encounter.

Even managed to kill the big demon (for a second time, actually).

They didn't, however, completely recognize some tell-tale signs & are now trapped in Hades.

Guess that happens sometimes.

Great #dnd session tonight - a tense tunnel encounter and escape! Now the party thinks they might be “infected” by the violent fungus and they’re no longer on the road to the dwarven city... #ttrpgs #rpgchat

Great #dnd session tonight - first game since early december due to sickness & weather. Not a lot of action, but some nice building momentum to the narrative.

Planning to continue next week to keep it going.

You can do/be whatever tf you want ofc, you dont fkn exist for me, but know that in so many cases trans women were so much more welcoming than the feminine spaces I grew up with. From my 1st RpgChat goth femme to peers at work, you inspire me and you make me into a better person.

Good #dnd game tonight - an interesting demon encounter has turned into a chaotic cliffhanger. We’ll see how this shakes out in a few weeks.

Not sure where on the scale I fall in practice, but definitely agree w/ the sentiment here.

IMO this becomes more true the more proactive the players are. The more passive the group, the more narrative the gm probably needs to keep things moving.

#ttrpgs #rpgchat
"Story happens after play" is one of the best phrases to describe a strong TTRPG performance, and a big part of why I am wary of (even invisible) railroading and pre-written scenarios. If the host has even a semi-solid idea of what the story should be, that feels like a missed opportunity.
"player agency" or a mark in "railroading's" favor. I don't railroad. I don't even have a plot or a "story" (story happens after play), but my players have no trouble knowing what they want their characters to do because they're given the information needed in order to make those decisions.

I'd also say make sure it makes some sort of sense for where they're finding it.

I hand-pick stuff a lot, but sometimes doing some random rolls can come up with things I wouldn't have thought of.

RPG tip: Roll for random treasure, then verify if that treasure's cool for your group.

OSR games are stories too. Check out what I have to say about it in my new Two Minute Tabletop Tip RPG video.

Great thread here! It's clear Rob has put a lot more thought into this than I have.

#ttrpgs #rpgchat
It's early and this is a truly atrocious cup of coffee, so it seems like a good time to pick a fight with the world.

"System doesn't matter" is a valid, reasonable, and *critically important* argument which has been rendered ragebait and a punchline by pedantry.
January 16, 2026 at 12:42 PM
Solid advice. Just the question "so where do you all think you'll go from here?" helps.

Best part of last night’s #dnd session was wife’s character using her ability to speak abyssal & limited knowledge of the situation to intimidate a cult leader.

Not at all her character’s forte, but a brilliant move in a desperate situation - pulled off w/ a little inspiration.

Absolute perfection. 👍 😆

I definitely get the "that doesn't make sense!" instinct as a GM - but over time I'd adopted a more "well there's no specific reason it DOESN'T make sense, so you know what, sure." approach.

But in 1999, i'd probably have been w/ Phil. 🤷‍♂️

#ttrpgs #dnd #shadowrun #rpgchat
In 1999, I was playing a decker in Shadowrun, and tried to distract a guard by hacking a water fountain to overflow, and my GM said "why would a water fountain be on the network? That's fucking stupid. No you can't try."

Well it's 2026 and I just want you to know, Phil, that I FUCKING CALLED IT!

Opinion question for the #ttrpg / #rpgchat folks:

Regarding various sidequests/subplots PCs in a given campaign invariably get into, is it more fun if:

A) All of them tie back into the main foci of the game.

or

B) Some of them are just "other things going on" in the setting.

Anyone have any creative tips for dealing with an absurd number of players in a ttrpg?

I'm still trying to find someone to run a second table, but i may have 16 (grade school - adult) for a class thing I'm doing.

Short sessions (~30-45 min). Fate Core/Condensed.
