At the end of 1991, the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR) became the Russian Federation. We commonly refer to the Russian Federation as "Russia" but is that really historically, ethnically, linguistically accurate?

#OTD in 1922 Russian Renault tanks were first shown to the world at a parade on Red Square. These were copies of French Renault FT tanks adapted for manufacture in the RSFSR. The tanks came too late to fight in the Russian Civil War and were only used for training #tanks #History

Renault FT tanks captured by the Red Army in April of 1919 made an impression on Soviet leadership. #OTD in 1919 a decision was made to build ten tanks. This was mostly a copy with some improvements and adaptations for automotive components available in the RSFSR. #tanks #history

In the UK, within a liberal democratic framework, you literally have the issue of the USSR-RSFSR relation, in that the main constituent entity has to have its institutions act as the All-Union government, and you can't really give it its own federal institutions bcs it gets wacky
Like, this co-operation between three different national governments is kind of the spirit of what unionism *should* have evolved into, the problem is a quarter of the union has 80+% of the population

In December 1943, the Kalmyk Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was liquidated and the Astrakhan region was formed as part of the RSFSR. The Kalmyk names of uluses and their centers, as well as individual settlements, were replaced by Russian names.

Drawing a line between Azerbaijani Iran and Persian Iran is way more traumatic and artificial and difficult than drawing a line between the RSFSR and the Azerbaijani SSR - everyone knew where that line was! They marked it on maps!

('Soviet russia' only lasted from 1917 to 1922 (RSFSR). The USSR eventually vanished in 1991).
