The Essay

They wrote an essay
It must have been so persuasive
Paragraphs of golden prose
Incredible Hook
Amazing evidence
A conclusion so powerful
it changed reality
The school assigned it
no justice
Just this essay
These rapists and their essays

Life

I often sit and ponder
the reasons for such pace

Are we not all heading
to exactly the same place

this life is not a race my friend
it's something you must face

however fast you travel dear
you never will escape

The Devil is in the Details

If the devil is in the details
Then where are all the saints

sitting on their sofas
puttering with their paints

waiting for the time to pass
so gentle when at rest

The Devil keeps on working
the Details he knows best

To Beating Hearts

I would if I could,
but there is no time.

My love, infinite though it may be,
is claimed by too many.

I am anchored by them,
and loving you would free me from this moor,
but such things are mere dreams, my amore.

We are but stars
with our own solar systems.

though I am #adroit in other things
I am dull in matters of hearts

make me feel your love
let me get soaked in your velvety embrace

for I feel trapped in my own emotions
set me free with your devotion

War is changing... and not in a good way... I kept it short because spoilers... What happened is crazy... hope you get to read it someday.

"Trusting the Reader" creates lasting, powerful prose. It allows the reader to share in the book's creation. They get to translate characters through their distinct lens and create new truths about the work.

Multiple drafts help me cut the over-explanation, giving space

It’s about time we had a reckoning with the need so many writers feel to over-explain everything aspect of their stories, even in non Weird genres. Readers don’t need to be babied. Let us figure things out. Leave room for interpretation. Over-explanation makes writing worse.
Weird fiction seems to be having a moment but without lots of the people trying to write it actually grasping what it is.

I keep reading stories where there’s clearly an attempt at vaguely gesturing towards ‘the Weird’ but they just cant help over-explaining everything. Truly frustrating stuff.

I just finished my first editorial pass of my first novel. It's really good. I'm really proud that I worked on it everyday for 8 months.

A gentle person becomes dangerous enough to save his people, and in doing so destroys what he wanted to save.

A lambent love
for all the world
to see

But what
a fire for
you and I

When I tried
to stay the same

when I picked up
the pieces
and packed them
away

when I made
desperate effort
to begin again

from any moment
before her end

that's when
a new pain came

a fresh, wet fear

born from
my reluctance
and aversion
to the certainty
of change

Two birds, one stone. Two prompts, one poem.

I felt blocked today, somewhat anxious. Caretaking an aging parent can be arduous. It's important to conjure some me time...

Beyond mantic lore
Take pause to beholden him
His luminous soul

Sometimes
he'd sit
on the floor

at the foot
of my bed

and thrum
upon his guitar

Sometimes
I'd sit

beside him
and

surprise him
when

I started
to sing
along

"I'd love to
assist you
in making sense
of it all

but first,

allow me to
obfuscate,"

says the voice
in my head

on any
given day

For a fleeting moment, I wasn't just stepping out of my car upon the driveway to retrieve the mail, but flying high above a snow-covered mountain range, destination unknown, feeling the spark, the #quiver of adventure.
