The implicit media consensus is that urban voters should not be able to overrule rural voters, but that rural voters should be able to overrule urban voters, an assumption so axiomatic and unquestionable that nobody even understands they're making it.
So much false equivalence in media on gerrymandering in Texas vs California & Virginia. California and Virginia maps approved by the voters. That's a huge difference not enough people pointing out

So many of us urban queers are refugees from rural America. The constant calls for urban liberals to "get to understand" rural America fail to recognize that we understand it all to well. It's why we fucking fled.

So when we say "rural outreach"… who do we mean?

Rural areas aren't a monolith.

Do we mean big landowners & mining interests?

Do we mean the rural cousins of urban libs, who tend to come from middle class+ rural families? (not exclusively obvs, but that's who can afford to send kids to college)

Also, as we all know, there are lots of rural areas that don't vote GOP.

Coincidentally, they're all the rural areas that aren't majority-white.

We do ourselves a real disservice pretending the "rural-urban divide" in politics is real. It ain't. Full stop.

Rick Wilson on MSNBC: Democrats can win everywhere—rural, suburban, and urban—if they stop chasing purity tests and start focusing on affordability and economic reality.

u.s. rural and small town policing is, I suspect, generally way more corrupt and brutal than urban policing but also reported on much less
A sheriff in Mississippi, the highest paid and most powerful public figure in his county, staffed his mother’s commercial chicken farm with inmates from the local jail and used taxpayer-purchased equipment to improve it, an investigation by The New York Times and Mississippi Today found.

There is gun violence in rural America, but much of it looks different.

Rural folks often don’t have access to healthcare or a good paying job, but they do have access to a gun — suicide rates are consistently higher in rural spaces than urban spaces.

very tired of being told it is the responsibility of urban democratic voters never to risk possibly maybe by chance seeming less than respectful of rural red state life and then watching thousands in nebraska cheer on the president joking about a nuclear strike on me and millions of my neighbors

Just going to point out again that our arbitrary political rules permit Republicans to attack urban areas with impunity but strictly forbid the faintest whiff of condescension toward rural areas by Democrats
“The first thing I thought was, ‘What is she talking about?’” said Bryan Fish, the vice mayor of Culver City, whom everyone calls Bubba but doesn’t look like someone whom everyone calls Bubba. “The only crime here,” he added, “is like the $18 strawberry at Erewhon.”

practically every rural-to-urban person i’ve known in my life (and i grew up in OK, i know a *lot* of these folks) is far harsher on the rural conservatives they grew up around than the average urban progressive, wonder why “you must be patient with the country folk” scholars don’t ever talk to them
Like, you know as well as I do that these people are not children who are just waiting to be led gently into the light. I'm so tired of this discourse. I love how nobody ever asks those of us who left these areas WHY we didn't stick around. Perhaps we have some fucking insight
