I remember as a kid if we had been to Scarborough to see aunty Joan and Uncle Harold for the day, we always went and came back by diverting off the coast road and through Ruswarp further up the Esk valley. A longer route but it avoided the inevitable Jam through Whitby.

The statue of Ruswarp the dog aged 14 (pronounced Russup). At Garsdale railway station, North Yorkshire. He went for a walk in the hills with his owner & never returned. They found the body after 11 winter weeks. With Ruswarp barely alive by his side. He lived just long enough to see his owners funeral. Taken with my phone from a moving train. Which is why it's blurred.

Please Note:
The A171 is closed at Hawsker until 1st May.
If you are coming from Scarborough, you can either take the turn off for Ruswarp and follow that road to Whitby OR via Robin Hood's Bay. The other diversions will take you miles out of the way.

I've moved to Howden le Wear, Cty Durham. More snow here generally. Snow more likely in Whitby late Winter ( sea is colder). I recommend Jackson's pies in Ruswarp - delicious.

Had a quick walk between these two while the train went to Whitby to turn around.
It’s a very nice bit of line here next to the River Esk and Ruswarp has a very nice bridge over it.
