🧵Back to Ryedale Museum and my favourite exhibit mainly because it tells a wonderful story of community. It is, the Farndale hearse. Victorian funerals were taken very seriously and a certain level of ceremony was expected. In some ways they were the equivalent of a present day wedding. These

The Ryedale Hoard bronzes also included a head of emperor Marcus Aurelius, a horse and rider figurine of Mars, and a plumb bob. Read more about this ‘nationally significant’ Roman bronze hoard on this link:

An early medieval hanging bowl its finder first mistook for a ‘rusty old bucket’ fetched £36,400 at auction #OTD in 2023. Chris Ulliott discovered the copper-alloy artefact during an organised dig in a field in Ryedale, North Yorkshire. 📸Timeline Auctions

Ryedale. Where cultures merged and strange words flowed in Yorkshire long ago.
🧵The famous 10th-century Anglo-Scandinavian and Viking stone crosses at St Andrew's Church, Middleton, Ryedale are securely housed in the safety of the church interior. They were recovered directly from the upper rubble layers of the church tower during structural preservation works in 1911.

The secret glassmakers of Rosedale were for many generations a fascinating, forgotten story until the chance discovery in 1968 of a furnace dating to the 16th century. After being excavated the furnace was moved to Ryedale Folk Museum where it is still to be found.
