Of course it could also be the opposite, that this is his first time controlling the Samuari, and that he made the puppeteering comment also to confuse Sam and throw him off balance.

Yes he's been puppeteering Sam, to connect the Knots, using APAS to further his revenge against Sam and Fragile. But has he also been the Samuari the whole time? It would certainly be in fitting with his personality, fucking with everyone, keeping them off balance.

Then we come to the penultimate encounter, when Higgs appears in the Magellan. This one is quite clearly Higgs in control of the Samuari, but he also quite clearly says "I've been puppeteering this whole thing the whole time." Now how many meanings does this sentence have?

Then we have the third meeting, on the bridge right before Terminal Fort Knot. This is where the Samuari unzips it's face, and you see Deadman's corpse. But is it really Deadman? We established a little while earlier that Higgs was a ghost mech, and his face and voice are a projection.

How do we know Higgs isn't fighting himself there, to make himself look *cool*, like the rockstar he's setting himself up to be? And again to throw Sam off balance, to start to think the Samuari could be a potential ally.

Next time we see the Red Samuari is when Higgs reveals himself in the weapons factory. There is a gorgeous fight scene between them, it is truly choreographed well. But pay close attention to how Higgs moves, he's showboating for all of that fight.
