Iceland is often associated with black sand, but it’s not the only kind on the island. This sand/gravel sample from Rauðisandur Beach is comprised of barnacle and shell fragments, and basalt.

Sunday/Sanday:: Okinawa’s famous “star sand” is a bit of a misnomer; see the alt text for the reason why.

Photograph my own.

“Star sand” is more accurately a biogenic gravel: its grain size is too large to geologically be classified as sand. The sample typically consists of star-shaped Baclogypsina sphaerulata and other shaped forams whose genera I can’t recall at the moment. In the image you can easily see at least four or more different types of foraminifera along with shell and coral fragments. Image description: A macro photograph of “star sand”, which consists of the tests of foraminifera. The eponymous star-shaped grains are Baclogypsina sphaerulata. The sample is shown on a black background to give contrast to the grains.
