a bright swirl of color make up this small quilt square. it is a vortex of pinks and blues that gets brighter and lighter into yellows as it goes down. the info sheet next to it reads: 30-9120 SAQA O ART QUILT Design Showcase 2025 SAQA CT, SAQA NJ + NY, SAQA PA Bright Abyss, 2025, by Christine Janove Statement: When looking into an abyss, we assume it would appear dark and ominous. However, for the poet and essayist Christian Wiman, who received a medical diagnosis predicting he had only five years to live over two decades ago, this is not the case. Instead of succumbing to despair, he cultivated wonder in everyday life to transform his perspective of a dire situation. His memoir is titled "My Bright Abyss". Intrigued by the writing and by the paradox of the title, this became the inspiration for my art. Visualizing the idea of a bright abyss in cloth, I imagined it as falling not into the unknown, but as holding hope in order to see light beyond the darkness. Being human is complex. If we live long enough, we experience sadness, some dark abyss not of our own making. In finding wonder in the ordinary moments of life, we may find the light. Bravo to SAQA for not lying down to the AQS's narrow-minded decision to pull two art quilts from the special SAQA exhibit. SAQA has now pulled the entire exhibit from all five of their shows.

SAQA (Studio Art Quilters Associates) isn't having any of AQS (Amer. Quilters Society) censorship. Just got an email from SAQA, excerpted below. Very proud to be a member of SAQA. #quiltsky
This text describes the problem faced by SAQA: they had a set of quilts that had been accepted to an AQS event, and as they were preparing to ship the quilts, AQS informed the that 2 of the quilts would be censored out of the show. The letter says, "The reasons given for removal were inconsistent with the Studio Art Quilt Associates' mission and values." This part of the letter describes SAQAs response: the Board of Directors voted unanimously to pull the entire exhibit from the AQS show. The letter says: "Censorship does not align with our organization's core values."

My latest art quilt. It is an aerial view of the beach. There are colorful dots to represent people, white and orange beach umbrellas, white and green beach umbrellas, colorful rectangles to represent beach towels, and a surfboard out in the water. This was made with fabric, acrylic paint (for the beach) and water color pencils (for the water).
