Karnataka's 26 GW Renewable Push Comes With Rs 3 Lakh Cr Price Tag
Karnataka could need around Rs 3 lakh crore of investment by 2030 to add 26 GW of renewable-energy capacity, setting the stage for a major expansion of the state’s clean-energy infrastructure and a fresh push to attract domestic and overseas capital, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) Secretary Santosh Kumar Sarangi said on Tuesday. The investment will be required across solar, wind, battery storage and clean-energy manufacturing, with transmission infrastructure and grid integration emerging as critical requirements for absorbing the additional capacity. Karnataka currently has around 27 GW of renewable-energy capacity and is targeting another 10 GW by 2027, which would take its portfolio to about 37 GW, according to Mir Mohammad Ali, Director at MNRE. With an identified renewable-energy potential of around 155 GW, the state is positioning itself for a significantly larger role in India’s clean-energy expansion. Investment Pitch Sarangi said Karnataka should use the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo 2026 to showcase its investment opportunities to multilateral institutions, pension funds, private equity investors and renewable-energy manufacturers. The summit is expected to bring together investors and international delegations, providing states with an opportunity to present their investment pipelines. Sarangi said Karnataka could highlight opportunities across solar,...

Renewable generation can be added in 18-24 months; transmission takes 3-5 years: Official
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a roadshow here ahead of the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo-2026, Sarangi said addressing the intermittency of renewable power through battery energy storage, strengthening transmission infrastructure and deploying artificial intelligence and digital technologies for grid management would be critical. The summit will be held from November 2 to 5 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, with “Invest, Inspire and Innovate” as its tagline. Sarangi said India would require about 239 GWh of battery energy storage by 2031. Referring to the proposed 10 per cent storage mandate for future solar and wind projects, he said battery storage would help supply power during peak demand periods. Meeting these storage and infrastructure requirements would also require significant investment, he said. On financing the next phase of renewable energy expansion, Sarangi said India would need a combination of international and domestic capital. “It will have to be a mix of all,” he said, referring to pension funds, multilateral development institutions such as the World Bank, IFC and ADB, and private equity investors. He said about Rs 18 lakh crore had so far been invested in the renewable energy sector through banks, financial institutions, FDI and private...

India Boosts Battery Investment to Cut Solar Power Waste
Solar power developers in India have started to add battery storage to photovoltaic projects to attract buyers and reduce the large share of curtailments for power supply that the grids are unable to absorb, Santosh Sarangi, Secretary of India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, said on Friday. As much as 42 gigawatts (GW) of solar projects are still struggling to find offtakers, with about 18 GW of solar-only projects without batteries most at risk of continuing to struggle, Sarangi said at the BNEF Summit in New Delhi, as carried by Bloomberg. Moreover, another up to 15 GW in total projects awarded at high prices also risk failing to secure buyers, according to the official. Without battery backup, solar projects see curtailments during the hottest months and peak daytime hours. India's electricity grid is expanding at a slower pace than the boom in renewable energy installations, leading to an increased share of clean energy curtailments and threatening to slow the solar and wind boom in the world’s most populous country. Grid and transmission constraints accounted for nearly two-thirds of all renewable energy curtailment at 300 gigawatt-hours (GWh) in the first quarter of the year, clean energy think tank Ember said...
