Got to wonder if SaskPolytech is in serious financial trouble. Provincial support for post secondary education has always been tepid. Federal restrictions to foreign students also a factor. Ridiculous treatment of current students.

RANT: Hello everyone, I do not post here often, though I feel that the new AI Data center in Regina warrants a rant. The Mayor of Regina, Chad Bachynski, has spoken out in support of a new AI data center being placed near the Saskpolytech Regina campus. I worry that there has been little to no consideration of the impacts this new facility will have on the residents of Regina. Did I miss when City Residents had an opportunity to provide an opinion on this? I’m shocked how far this has gone to be ready for approval! First, this center will use vast amounts of water, which has the potential to go unregulated as they will pull water from “private cisterns”. These are the same cisterns that farmers and local residents rely on for water. Last year Regina residents were told to reduce our water consumption, stop watering our lawns, and take less baths. Yet now, the city is welcoming a Bell AI data center that will use more water in one year than the entire town of White City. Will we soon have to compete with a mega corporation from the basic necessity of clean drinking water? Not to mention that these centers often cannot recycle the water they use, as up to 80% of it is evaporated during the computer server cooling process. There also stands the question of power usage. The 90,000 square foot facility will use vast amounts of power, how will our grid be able to sustain such high need from the Bell facility? What upgrades will need to be made to accommodate this increase in usage? I wonder how long it will be until the cost of this shows up in our power bills. Regina taxpayers will bear the load for a mega corporation, and our mayor is openly supporting this. How has our mayor not questioned how many permanent jobs this center will actually create? While construction crews will be needed to build the site, how many of these jobs will be sustained beyond construction? Is the exploitation of our power and water worth a few temporary jobs? I am disheartened to learn that the University of Regina and Sask Polytechnic are supporting this center. A simple Google search of the power and water usage of AI data centres pulls up thousands of results, all pointing to the murky and unregulated use of resources AI centres try to hide. This is horrible news for the people of our city, and it is only a matter of time until the effects are felt by all of us.

Good thing we finally got our grain bins anchored yesterday.
Wind warning for Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. 60 - 70 km/hr sustained winds with gusts of 90 - 100 km/hr. Getting close to bin-toppling gust strength. Two hopper bottom grain bins in the middle of some open yard space at the SaskPolytech Agriculture and Food Production demonstration farm SW of Moose Jaw. Not a wind blocking tree to be found for hundreds of km to the west.

I'm super excited about the latest tool we just got in to help with teaching, outreach and at student recruitment events. We got a camera and display to go with our trinocular dissecting microscope. #invertefest
I teach in an agriculture diploma program at SaskPolytech in Moose Jaw, SK, Canada.
Everyone's favourite, a maple bug on low power magnification viewed on a screen attached to a dissecting microscope. Although annoying at times, these guys are pretty harmless. Don't eat them though, they contain toxins that make them taste bad to potential predators. A close up view of a couple of aphids adults, a small aphid nymph, and an adult parasitoid wasp seen on the screen attached to a dissecting microscope. These wasps are tiny and lay their eggs into other insects, such as aphids. When most people think of wasps, they think of larger insects that pester them on the deck and might sting. However, the vast majority are good gals like this that are tiny and help keep the pests in check. The twisted awn unwinds with increased humidity which causes the seed to "walk", i.e. get pushed around until it falls into a crack in the dirt or pushes itself into the ground a bit.

Without money, we wouldn't have ransomware attacks too.
