Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort: A Luxurious Fiji Escape Beyond the Brochures
The Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort on Vanua Levu Island in Fiji offers a luxurious escape that goes beyond typical resort brochures, providing an authentic and serene experience. Located on a peninsula overlooking Savusavu Bay, the resort has undergone a multi-million-dollar renovation, transforming it from its original backpacker accommodation roots. The resort's focus remains on the sea, reflecting the Cousteau family's legacy of ocean conservation and exploration. Guests arrive via a small airport on Vanua Levu, passing through lush rainforests and pastel-colored timber houses, creating an immediate sense of ease and connection to the natural environment. Accommodation includes updated bure (traditional Fijian houses) with polished mahogany floors, vaulted ceilings, and spacious decks featuring hammocks and sun loungers. The resort emphasizes a 'Fiji time' concept, encouraging guests to relax without distractions like television, though reliable Wi-Fi is available. The resort's culinary experience is highlighted by Chef Shaun Thomson, who focuses on locally sourced ingredients and Fijian flavors, including dishes like grilled walu and kokoda (a local ceviche). The resort also offers various activities such as mountain hiking, village tours, crab trap making, and excursions to the Namena Marine Reserve. The resort's all-inclusive pricing covers meals, non-alcoholic drinks, kids' club, and many activities, with oceanfront two-bedroom bure starting at $3169 per night. The resort's commitment to sustainability and local engagement is evident in its partnerships with local farmers and fishermen, as well as its use of on-site gardens and greenhouses. The resort's location and design create a seamless blend of luxury and natural beauty, making it a standout destination for discerning travelers seeking an authentic Fijian experience.

Still at it! I’m in Savusavu, in Fiji. I was supposed to fly from here to Nadi to catch a morning flight to Funafuti tomorrow but they cancelled all flights out of Savusavu due to maintenance so I’m being routes through Suva and staying the night in a converted copra shed. Here’s my remaining route

Fiji. We’re on Vanua Levu, the second biggest island, near the town of Savusavu on the south coast. Paradise!

Anyway, we crammed ourselves into a tiny twin-prop plane we couldn’t stand up in & made it to Savusavu. 🙌 Got to our resort & we were just finishing dinner when our bags showed up. So all OK in the end. Bula!

Our flight from Nadi to Savusavu got pushed back 2 hours, which is inconvenient, but I guess we’ll just have to wander around the beach cafes & bars here till it’s time to go.

Packing for Fiji, and while I will be checking a bag, it’s going to be well under 12kg. I saw that our short flight between Nadi & Savusavu has a limit of 15kg & went Pfft: I’ve done 6-7 week Europe trips with less than that.
