CA SB381--the unrestricted OBC access bill already passed by the Senate-- has just been assigned to the Assb Health and Judiciary Committees. We will issue an Action Alert shortly, but in the meantime we have already submitted our letter of support. bit.ly/4nbRLjH bit.ly/4nbRLjH

It's good that SB381 in Calif. would forbid this.

"Existing law authorizes the adopting parents to request an amended certificate that omits...the city & county of birth, or the color and race of the parents.

"This bill would repeal that authorization." leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNa...

NY Adoptee Rights Coalition with a letter in support of CA SB381, which would give CA #adoptees unrestricted access to their own birth records.

“Since the law's enactment, NYARC has not heard any negative stories from birth parents, who have also been some of our most active advocates and allies. +

🌴 Since I had posted that California's adoptee rights bill would be heard in committee next week, I now feel responsible for letting people know the hearing for SB381 was postponed to 6/23. I'm just impatient for this bill to pass the State Assembly after doing so well in the Senate (35-0).

❗Well done! Discussion of adoptee rights bill SB381 ended at 9:20am PDT, all testimony in support. One legislator asked what took us so long. We've been trying for years!

However, we have to wait for a vote because there was no quorum in the Assembly Judiciary Committee. I can't imagine failure.

🎉 Fantastic testimony in support of adoptee rights bill SB 381 by Senator Aisha Wahab (author of bill), Wendy Turk (adoptee) & Gretchen Sisson (sociologist and author of "Relinquished"). Also, individuals in support of the bill are lined up to support adoptees' right to our own birth certificate. 🥚

In Sacramento at the senate judiciary committee hearing, advocating for the rights of CA-born adopted people to access their own records. I am concerned about tomorrow’s health committee hearing. If you are in CA, you can call the health committee senators (see below) & advocate in support of SB381.

Bill author Aisha Wahab was just great, speaking at the end about the importance of adoptees learning our ethnicity & health history. She'd been in foster care herself. A great start for SB 381.

California Alliance for Adoptee Rights’ mission is clear: to ensure adult adoptees have the same access to their own birth records as everyone else. Adoptee rights are human rights. Identity access is not radical. Secrecy is not protection.
