FREEDOM TO READ

October's challenge for SCBWI illustrators is to illustrate: "Freedom to Read"

#scbwidrawthis #scbwiillustrators #Freedomtoread #familiesthatreadtogether #loveofreading #books #relaxing
The challenge was to draw an image from the concept: "Freedom to Read." My first rough sketches were drawings of books being withheld, unattainable by a crowd reaching for the books behind bars- in light of current book banning. Another sketch was of a child reading in black and white, and in the thought bubble all the images he was reading were in color. Finally, what I went with was a simple line drawing of a family reading together, relaxed, in their living room. The image shows the mother on the couch with her cat asleep on top of her, implying that they have been cozy there for awhile. The Dad is in a comfortable chair, leg extended on a big ottoman. A child is in the window seat, lost in a book with the best light. Another cat peeks from behind the curtain. The colors are purposely limited, just a teal and tan color, to highlight the ink line drawing. Reminiscent of mid -century limited palette printing.

Books Open New Worlds. This is my illustration for this October’s Draw This Challenge by #scbwidrawthis.

Reading books has the power to open new worlds, helps you have new experiences and return changed for the better.

A red-haired child kneels on the pages of an enormous open book, flying into a magical world of swirling pink clouds and a luminous castle on a floating island. Inspired by Michael Ende’s The Neverending Story, this illustration celebrates the freedom to read, dream and explore imaginary worlds.

It's been a very long time since I posted any artwork. Too much AI slop and bots these days. But I like this piece for the prompt this month.

For SCBWI's Draw This! September prompt, Monochrome, a blue dolphin with light blue stars soars over the blue starry Northern Lights. Two icebergs float on either side of the dolphin. The sea and sky shine with turquoise and light blue shades. A gleaming blue jellyfish floats serenely underneath the dolphin.
