#schizomid
an awesome order! blown away when I found these in Singapore - maybe a species that was described only from a greenhouse in Germany?? Bucinozomus hortuspalmarum

Thanks to @franzanth.bsky.social for drawing my attention to this wonderful post. Look at those gorgeous, shiny schizomid babies! Many arachnids are great moms 😍
Just a girl and her bundle of baby clones she's wearing like an ass turban 🥹
My population of Schizomida (parthenogenic tailless whipscorpions) are so happy in their box of dirt. As always, tending a box of dirt is such a good decision and I recommend it.

What time is it? It’s #Cheliceratime & #Fossilfriday !
It's our first schizomid! It's also to my knowledge the 1° paleoart of this miocene species!

All the basic infos are here but if you want to learn more, there’s more below!⬇️

I have only seen one schizomid in my entire life, and zero zoraptorans. There are always more logs to flip.

While not my best shot, arguably one of my coolest finds from the tropics, what is very likely the first identifiable live photo of Surazomus selva! A schizomid found along the atlantic slope of Costa Rica in lowland rainforest, as the name suggests described from La Selva Biological Station

this is my first time seeing a schizomid baby wow

Subterranean - Troglofauna

Troglofauna are creatures that live in caves and small spaces underground.

They tend to crawl or jump around instead of fly because they have no eyes or wings. Typically they have reduced or no eyes and navigate the dark with other means. 🎨 🐡

Story time: one time I found a new species unknown to science during #InverteFest in Dec 2021.

This thing that looks like a weird, long spider is called a schizomid, also known as spricket (short for spider cricket). Schizomids are obscure, understudied arachnids most people have never heard of.

the sperm whale and the schizomid is REALLY SOMETHING

Don't make me choose one- they're all so great 🙂. However, there are only a few that have photos with associated habitat e.g. Draculoides bramstokeri

If you see this, post a vampire

Any excuse to show a schizomid - this is Draculoides bramstokeri, a subterranean arachnid that is only known from a single island (Barrow Island) off Western Australia.

!! That’s cooler than pseudos! I’ve only ever seen a schizomid once
October 8, 2025 at 4:13 PM
@drkmabrams.bsky.social there are several Draculoides schizomid species, do you remember which one we wanted to highlight? one from your 2020 paper? and what can you tell us about the habitat? :D
July 16, 2024 at 3:16 AM
my leaf litter is mostly schizomid territory, might have to look closer because the pseudos are much smaller

You know the drill, let's first talk about this species naming history, morphology, distribution and life cycle of this schizomid.

Now that March Mammal Madness has branched out to every critter & some plants, in the 2024 edition there was Draculoides bramstokeri & it was very cool learning about a Schizomid! I agree more people should know about them.

First, when & where did this schizomid live, what its fossils look like, and a few things about the history of how it was named.

The Chief Artificer bristled at the admiration that filled the Savant’s voice as he examined the Schizomid drone. These were beasts, dammit! Not to be admired like a well-crafted suit of protective armor!

I think people (including myself) fail to realise just how diverse arthropods are! I was recently humbled when attempting to ID a Schizomid - a distant cousin of an arachnid group I’m very familiar with - and was presented with the beautiful and thoroughly incomprehensible word ‘propeltidium’.
reading about organisms that aren’t your specialty is like

margins of the quorbus eplungulate, ploobular processes bent posteriorly towards the foobulum

define term “eplungulate”
- lacking plungae. synonym: thubulous

@franzanth.bsky.social this has great video footage of Cape Range caves so you can see what the habitat looks like. Cape Range has numerous schizomid species including Draculoides vinei. Some of these are listed threatened species
July 16, 2024 at 1:51 PM
This species is among the several fossil species showing how much geogrphy shaped schizomid's evolution, and as always, the usual paleoart autofeedback (it's the first paleoart of this species!) and refs!

Thank you for reading & I’ll see you on the next #Cheliceratime!
