My God, the number of schoolfriends who have later got in touch with me to say how damaged or altogether broken they were by this experience. One of them, who is middle-aged, regularly has night terrors about it.
It's interesting how long it takes for people to realise how corrosive this privilege was

Was talking about this very thing with two old schoolfriends a month or two back.
For example, I didn't meet an out gay person until I went to university. Like fuck would you have come out at a comprehensive in the 80s. You'd have needed to be brave beyond description and also, hard as nails.

Last year I met up with schoolfriends Paul Proctor and Andrew Farrow. Paul programmed the BBC Micro conversions of Knight Lore, Alien 8, Nightshade and other Ultimate games. Andrew helped him with the room mapping. Paul played Alien 8 for the first time in about 40 years! Book/game signing too.

My grand aunt saw her father die of TB, lost siblings to whooping cough, had schoolfriends crippled by polio. If she was live today she'd think we'd all gone insane.

On holiday with schoolfriends and watching #heatedrivalry. One sofa full of ladies is vociferously Team Shane (the socks won them over), the other strong Team Ilya. The subtitles are in Spanish so I am valiantly translating and putting a lil theatrical spin on it as I go.
