Schumpeter on steroids

Frankly that’s most capitalists. Schumpeter was pessimistic about Schumpetrian innovation.
Another thing I learned living in the South is that the gentry does not aspire to be richer in absolute terms, but is singularly obsessed with being richer in relative terms.

"King Shit of Turd Mountain" was the expression I heard tossed around.
I wonder if in economically destitute places like Louisiana, land/business owners actually get a bigger share of economic surplus, or if they just feel like they do because they have so much power over workers

No, it's clear that the initial growth is due to the capex and it's only later that you figure out if it created innovation/you get a contraction if it turns out the investment was useless. But then if you like you can do more capex to stimulate the economy and kick the can further down the road!

Schumpeter, of course, loved nothing more than bureaucracy and centralisation

I wrote a book The Creative Destruction of Medicine (2013, title adopted after Schumpeter).

This title of the book for what we are now seeing in the U.S. is just The Destruction of Medicine.

I've read Schumpeter Capitalism Socialism & Democracy cover to cover at least half a dozen times and it's only in the middle of class last week that I noticed the ~2pp devoted to the proposition "with no power comes no responsibility"— sometimes in almost verbatim that language—

Schumpeter--for some fresh air.

There’s a Schumpeter quote that’s something like “the achievement of capitalism is not the manufacture of silk stockings; queen Elizabeth had silk stockings. The achievement of capitalism is to put them in reach of factory girls.”
Pretty much the entire history of technological innovation is a new product that’s worse but cheaper. Your electric razor is not as good as a barber with a knife, your AI is not as good as an executive assistant, even your mass produced wine is not as good as 500 year old vine grown French wines.
At an industry event last night one (old media) journalist said “we may need institutions like the BBC because internet searches don’t return separate news stories now, but an AI summary that is usually wrong.”

Watching an industry shrug and surrender to a competitor that DOES NOT WORK.

its kinda interesting how little periphery-centric theories of empire have percolated down into pop culture. people are still talking like schumpeter or lenin are the final word on the scholarship of imperialism
Westminster, which usually treated the Empire as an afterthought at best and spent most of its time trying to avoid doing anything, was perfectly happy to govern through princely states and protectorates, and in places like South Africa often tried to block the local settlers from starting wars.

Kalecki, Schumpeter, Gershchenkron. All come from Eastern Europe and are fundamentally unimpressed with their capitalists.

Even Schumpeter hated the "socialism only works for selfless angels" argument.

Crise schumpétérienne en Ukraine
L’économiste Joseph Schumpeter définissait la crise comme le moment où l’on n’obtient presque plus de résultats avec les moyens que l’on utilise.
