Cancer competition for vitamin B2 creates metabolic checkpoint for T cell ferroptosis
A CRISPR screen of solute carriers reveals that T cells depend on SLC52A3 for VB2 uptake, whereas tumors preferentially exploit SLC52A2 to outcompete them, thereby driving T cell ferroptosis.…

Some may have considered my behavior to be a bit “odd” or “eccentric” for a High Schooler… Perhaps, intrusive for asking others about their morning bowel movements… Alas, we now know it was a clear indication of my passion for data-driven science, and gateway into psychoneuroimmunology research!
Findings from this strikingly early career study demonstrated a positive correlation between reported AM 💩 satisfaction & present mood rating; such that as reported satisfaction with AM 💩 increased, students’ mood ratings also increased (indicating more positive mood rating).
We knew I was going to become a psychological scientist from quite a young age. I went around the High School running my first experiment: Collecting data on peer students’ reports as to whether they had (1) taken a 💩 that AM, (2) rating of 💩 satisfaction, and (3) present mood.

Olowalu reef off Maui provides window into two centuries of environmental changes
New research led by University of Hawaiʻi Sea Grant College Program (Hawaiʻi Sea Grant), UH Mānoa School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), and U.S. Geological Survey analyzed a 253-year old core from a massive coral colony at Olowalu Reef off West Maui to reconstruct how Olowalu has changed over time, what has driven those changes, and what restoring healthy connections between land and sea may mean for the reef’s future. The study, published in Coral Reefs, analyzed the coral core from approximately 1760 to 2013 which provided a rare glimpse into the conditions that began before large-scale changes to the West Maui landscape following Western contact occurred, and continued through plantation agriculture and modern coastal development. Chemical indicators associated with sediment, nutrients, and other land-derived inputs generally increased over the 253-year record, with some of the largest changes occurring during the twentieth century as sugarcane agriculture expanded across West Maui. At the same time, the coral’s growth record showed that calcification increased through much of the record before beginning to decline around the late 1960s, concurrent with sugarcane expansion. Coral skeletons Like the rings of a tree, corals build their skeletons incrementally over time. As they grow,...

ALBATROSS: A bioinspired, aerially deployable, autonomous sailing sensor platform - Science Robotics
ALBATROSS: A bioinspired, aerially deployable, autonomous sailing sensor platform - Science Robotics
Rapid deployment of autonomous sensor platforms in remote aquatic areas remains a challenge for environmental monitoring, disaster response, and ocean science. We present ALBATROSS (Airborne Lander with Buoyant AuToROtating Sailing Sensor), a hybrid bioinspired robot that passively autorotates for soft water landing and transitions into a wind-driven sailboat. Its dual-function rigid wingsails, acting as both sails and autorotating wings, enable efficient descent and propulsion. A freely rotating main sail, controlled by a tail rudder, and a directly actuated front sail enhance thrust and aerodynamic stability. A biomimetic caudal fin–inspired rudder enables propulsion during low-wind conditions and agile maneuvering in challenging upwind tacking. We empirically evaluated different wingsail airfoils through wind tunnel testing and optimized rudder design through hydrodynamic modeling, material selection, and speed-power efficiency analysis across different sizes and stiffnesses. Field experiments validate aerial deployment from 150 meters, autorotating descent, passive self-righting, and successful waypoint navigation using both rule-based control and a reinforcement learning approach. By integrating minimal actuation, bioinspired structures, and passive dynamics across aerial and marine operating regimes, this work extracts generalizable design principles for lightweight, aerially deployable sailing robots capable of robust, energy-efficient marine sensing.
