Usually, I am behind the scenes at our SciPub, but this time I presented the work of my lab. It was a great experience, and with Josh Miranda, I had the best co-presenter. Many thanks to everyone who came out, and see you all in October!

Currently writing an article about the future role of scientific societies/journals.

I've got plenty of thoughts but what do you think? You never know I might be able to incorporate your thoughts into the article.

What do you think the future role of society journals should be?

Changing incentives changes behavior.

If scientific assessment rewards rigor, transparency, reproducibility, and human relevance, researchers will be empowered to use the methods best suited to answering the question at hand, without worrying about expectations and bibliometrics.

Can there ever be a pre-emptive blanket statement for what's relevant? No.

The paper appears (I've not read it either, just commenting on the ideas) to generalize to a couple of critical points to begin that extra work this approach requires. Hopefully, flipping quantity for quality in #scipub.

SciPubEco: Ecology in the pub
Hi everyone,  The SciPub team have been busy putting together a great topic for our upcoming October event. We are excited to invite you all to join us for SciPubEcology. Come along and hear our panellists explore threatened species, giant frogs and marine ecology. Please join us for #SciPubEco on Friday 6th October at the Rob Roy Hotel (106 Halifax Street in the city). This event kicks off at 6:00 pm and will finish by approx. 7:30 pm (doors will be open from 5:30 pm for those who wish to arrive early for seat). The principal goal of SciPub is to make science engaging and accessible to the public. Each panel consists of three experts who deliver short, 10-15 minute presentations on their area of expertise and then discuss questions from the audience via a moderator. Panellists are selected primarily on their ability to effectively communicate science in an engaging and non-technical manner. SciPub is held in a pub so that scientists, aspiring scientists, and non-scientists can learn, discuss and think critically about hot topics in science. We are pleased to announce our panellists for #SciPubEco are: Doug Bickerton - Ecologist, Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources, South Australia  Prof Karen Burke da Silva - Dean (Education), Flinders University  Dr Marc Jones - ARC DECRA Fellow, University of Adelaide  and the South Australian Museum Please take note. We endeavour to make your SciPub experience an enjoyable one. Although Eventbrite issues automated tickets, we do not check or collect tickets at the venue. The RSVP facility makes it easier for us to estimate numbers so that we can accommodate accordingly. RSVPing does not guarantee a seat. Doors are open from 5:30pm and due to the popularity of some past events, we would advise patrons to arrive early to avoid any disappointment. Thank you for your support. We hope to see you there!

Holy cats this paper I’m working on had so much image reuse with different labels. Won’t see the light of day now because we got it post acceptance but prior to publication. #SciPub #ImageForensics

#PlantScience #SciPub folks, check out this awesome illustrator!
My brother is an awesome illustrator who is especially exited by plants, particularly trees. Need some plant drawings? You can't do better. (Pass this on, @jennifermach.bsky.social?)
Here's my newest conifer illustration suite: the Australian Coast Cypress Pine. It is a member of the Cypress family (Cupressaceae).

The TLDR: Impact Inflation tells you when a journal is "punching above their weight", or have an "inflated value" in terms of IF. Golf rules, lower is better.

IF is a flawed metric. Impact Inflation normalizes the IF so you can tell what it means.

That's #FrontiersMedia ladies and gents. The strain on scientific publishing is motivated by journal groups wanting to streamline the publishing of papers. Gold OA ties papers published to revenue. The more you can pump out, regardless of quality, the better.

Wow, that ain't great. #ResearchIntegrity concerns in ThermoFisher's validations of its own antibodies...

Fraud by specific labs? That affects the lab, and to variable extents from "meh" to "eurgh", the field the lab published in.

Fraud by companies selling reagents?

Spent the last hour looking, found ten more apparently manipulated Western blots in Thermo Fisher's antibody verification data (across eight different catalogued products). Thread below.

Commented on the spike in retractions lately. There's no question we can't just let people get away with fraud. But to deal with the root problems, we need to address the root causes. #SciPub

Just a reminder, we not only wrote about the profiteering nature of the Springer-Nature Discover journal series, but we made a "guess the publisher" game!

Well done Swissuniversities! @snsf.ch et al. once again leading the charge (see previous special issue announcement).

Funders and institutes hold the cards. If they don't pay the profiteers, we researchers will just adapt.

We don't need Nature. Nature needs us.
