The former 'mainstream' of Marvel/DC is a shadow of its former self. The money isn't there anymore. The smart talent is doing YA books for Scolastic.

I remember going to the scolastic book fair in 2nd grade and discovering bone. It allowed me to realize that comics were way beyond Marvel and DC. There were fantastical storylines, deep characters, and attractive art. Thank You Jeff Smith for getting me into comics the way you did🫶🏾

This doesn't erase your experience. It provides context as to why their opinion via observation isn't baseless as more collection books were available.
(There's probably another discussion about how the Scolastic book fairs starting in 1981 also substantially contributed, but I'd need more data)

Mules And Men- Zora Neale Hurston (African American folklore, via my community college lit prof mom).
AND
A String in the Harp- Katherine Bond (Youth Lit, Newberry Honor book, via my much younger brother's Scolastic Book Fair haul).
Age 15

Also, I think kids who read a lot end up experiencing YA novels as a genre more than a reading level guide. So, they'll wander elsewhere as well.

I also saw a couple of folk using this as an occasion to dunk on YA in general and the Yoots These Days or feeling they were being dunked on, which, eh. The form here is "I fear that (existence of good thing) robs kids of (harrowing lore-building experience)"

I can also see #intollerance on TV every day - many do not notice that... one of those is 'adding #subtitles' to foreing speakers (in english0 that actually speak #scolastic #English #language BETTER than English born!

I think Scolastic reprinted them somewhat recently? The Applegates' website has more information. I do know that they very deliberately do not make any moves to get pirated versions of the ebooks removed because they think it's more important for the books to be available (but do buy if you can).

This is a question not related to Dcst at all but... does anyone know how to deal with school phobia? Like some tips and all, I don't skip classes or whatever but damn just being at uni/doing some "scolastic" related things makes me really anxious 💀
