a lot of what has made discourse insane is that there's an entire crop of guys who live in dc, do a ton of uppers, and have massive gender insecurity around the fact that they're soft-handed scribes

Its been assumed that only men were scribes before the advent of the printing press in the 15th century. New research (N=24K; 800-1626C.E.) finds 1.1% were written by female scribes, inferring that 110,000 manuscripts were made by women in medieval times.

I have no proof but neither doubt that something like this happened. Scribes were human, after all 😇

It's a very silly idea, but I had to draw it.

People will join the scribes guild and write anything on a piece of parchment. “The hermit of dogweed wood has crones”. No he doesn’t. That isn’t true

Scribes in ancient Egypt wrote while sitting down for extended periods. A new analysis of their skeletons found they probably had pain in the knees, fingers, thumb, ankles, shoulders, lower jaw, right collarbone, neck and back. Perhaps you can relate. 🧪 www.scientificamerican.com/article/anci...

what's funny about this is that monks were perfectly delighted with the printing press, the myth that the late medieval church resisted printing is false, you can actually embellish printed books and people did, illuminators and scribes are not the same people, and simon should read more.
Academic BlueSky is becoming an echo chamber about AI. Like a monastery chuckling about how the printing press can’t embellish a letter with gold leaf.
there is no rhyme or reason to an entire “AI” department, much less an AI school. There is no curriculum, as such, because AI is not a school of thought. It has no theory, no method. It’s just a tool. Two or three courses, max, if someone is obsessed with it should suffice.
