9.5 years ago I wrote a story about how SDOT wasn't doing this, and today I got to write a story about how SDOT finally is doing this.
I just want to provide a little excerpt of what Strauss's condescending questioning of SDOT staff actually looked like today.
SDOT explains that funds for Third Ave are being transferred, and Strauss says this means the department thinks Third Ave is "in the state that it should be at this time."

Budget chair Dan Strauss just brought up a whole bunch of sort of unrelated concerns about the SDOT budget, saying that overall it is "not normal." SDOT is cutting projects because of an ongoing revenue shortfall, which Wilson's budget makes up in part with higher parking taxes.

Here is Dan Strauss talking about how this taco stand has been the most positive activation of this street corner he has seen in years. SDOT Director Emery confirms SDOT will take an approach of education first with a path to permitting. Tonight SPD shut this stand down citing enforcement by SDOT.

I'm at Seattle city hall where SDOT is giving the council a deep dive on its proposed 2027-2028 budget. At a high level: the department is making big reductions to respond to a major projected deficit in the transportation fund.
Without changes, SDOT would be looking at a $113M deficit by 2028.

SHOVEL TIME: SDOT is expected to start filling the Marqueen Gap as early as Monday. Queen Anne Greenways has been working with SDOT on this project for the past year and it will be a big improvement.
