Plastic pellet spill near Tyne seabird colony sparks environmental concern
A significant spill of plastic pellets, known as nurdles, has occurred at the Port of Tyne, posing a serious threat to marine life and coastal ecosystems. The incident, caused by a collision between two vessels on 19 July, resulted in an estimated 1 billion nurdles spilling into the sea near Marsden Bay, home to a vital seabird colony. Environmental groups warn that these microplastics can be mistaken for food by wildlife, leading to malnutrition and long-term ecological damage. Volunteers expressed frustration over delays in allowing clean-up efforts, with critics accusing authorities of an inadequate response. While specialist contractors have begun recovery operations, campaigners argue that immediate action is crucial to prevent further spread. The Environment Agency has launched an investigation, but concerns remain about the lack of a formal emergency declaration and coordinated government intervention. Ongoing efforts focus on containing the spill and monitoring its impact on wildlife, with calls for stronger regulations to prevent future incidents.
