In his oral history, Secor even expressed concern about the boundaries of the federal flood zone. He didn’t trust that they were accurate or safe. He knew from experience and generational knowledge where flood water could go.

So ... I was able to find and speak with a descendant of Thornton Secor, whose oral history about Texas floods I wrote about. Turns out his daughter still owns and operates the same lodge along the Guadalupe River. It flooded July 4.
As a journalist and emerging public historian, I spent much of the past week reading through transcripts of oral histories made and collected by residents of Kerr County, Texas – where flash floods killed more than 100 people this month.
