1/ Nearly five years after the start of the war in Ukraine, Russian soldiers still don't have secure tactical communications. A review of videos published by the Russian MOD shows soldiers invariably using cheap self-purchased Chinese digital and unencrypted analogue radios. ⬇️

the thing that has really kneecapped Itch in recent years is that it has always operated best less as a store and more a forum for self-published games, with a support structure of outlets and Posters to direct and curate people towards the weirdest / coolest curiosities. That network is now gone.

I’m sue a self-help book published in 1952 is resonating with the younger fans in the audience.

This is scab behaviour, IMO. It is due to the fact that so many authors, particularly self-published authors, unfortunately, are unable or unwilling to show any solidarity with each other and other artists that allows big companies to walk all over us.
Naturally, most authors present in the server at the time were against it, and the organiser was like, "this is our stance, if you don't agree, feel free not to participate."

Some people took to FB hoping the other organiser might step in, but no luck.

again, a big part of why the NYT published the Alaska story and didn't publish the rape allegations is self promotion.

the rape allegations were public info. the times would be informing their readers, but would not be marketing themselves or their reporting.

I've been traditionally published, and I'm self-published. I've always called myself self-published, but I was recently reprimanded for calling a fellow author that.

I honestly didn't know that some authors find the term derogatory. I was told the term is independent author (indie).

Yeah, I tell aspiring writers that if they want to dictate everything without making room for collaborators' ideas and preferences then they need to be a self-published novelist.

"I want you to support indie authors by buying my self-published book, but I'm gonna do the opposite of supporting indie artists by using genAI to vomit up a custom cover design," is... quite a take.

Oh man, I knew it was bad, but I didn't think it was Self-Published Self-Insert Fanfic bad.

they love fanfic but hate self published stuff (confusing double standard). the reason i self pub is because publishers have fucked me over. the press that published my first book (which i won an award for btw) never paid me any of my royalties for instance. and then that happened again w a diff

Have I been asleep at the wheel? When did the term self-published become unacceptable? I don't find it offensive, but apparently some do. I don't care if I'm called self-published or indie.

Am I the only one?

Oh shit a self published fantasy writer with a bad opinion? Now I have seen it all

I did not write 6 books to deal with this Ai nonsense. I wish I had just self-edited and self-published them years ago. And I knew some great cover artists. But no, I wanted a line editor. Never had the money.

genuinuely there is some great self-published stuff out there and then sometimes you get two chapters in like "I've read better on wattpad"

I would really like to see Kate Beaton do a Lois Lane book. Brian Clevinger would be great on Creature Commandos. And I think it would be really funny to give Donna Troy to Justin Pierce. #ngl

What on Earth.

They too my trash idea and just... Self published it out...

With the whole AO3 situation, I think it's a great opportunity to step out of your comfort zone and read some original fiction. There are so many great self published novels waiting to grow their own fandom. Give them a chance, your favorite series to obsess over started from nothing, too.

Hehehe it’s just self published mostly just an annoying bureaucratic process xD But yes it’s kinda exciting to see it published haha ❤️❤️❤️

(Incidentally, my old blog and my one mediocre self-published novel were Creative Commons Share Alike Non-Commercial because I think current copyright law is bad and wrong.)

There was a joy in discovering an absolutely terrible but also clearly very sincere self-published book. Now it's all generic slop.
