My only plea to sff is to:
1. Broaden the reading range: include more indies and selfpubs.
Otherwise, trad sff will always strong-arm the competition.

If these were selfpubs who reached heights because of rabid word of mouth it would be one thing, but these were specifically purchased to be platformed

Yes, there might be a broadening of audience, but the money-to-effort ratio wouldn't change, and it's also genuinely unfair to the authors to have to basically function like selfpubs in the sales effort when that's not the expectation

The NYT book review folks I worked with did try to help. (This was before the paper started to become Fox Lite.) But the NYT did not review selfpubs at the time -- idk if this has changed -- and they didn't have the kinds of connections in SFF that they do in the lit world. And SFF lit is a mess.

To add though, re: libraries (and this is probably one for publishers/selfpubs more than readers) - I know Kobo makes ebooks available to libraries via Overdrive, so that's also an option

the anthology I'm in is a sophomore effort by a group of selfpubs who have their shit together for their own work, which made me trust them for handling others' short fiction

Wow. Tor books? Shame on them. I am a hybrid author but mostly publish traditionally. Selfpubs try to save money by doing their own covers (Ugh!) and not hiring editors. Always hire designers and at least copy editors!
