Sometimes I wonder if at work they think of me as ‘the colon & semi-colon guy’ since I’m quite confident I’m in the 1st percentile of people that use them in emails. (And don’t get me started on dashes.)

Yup, but the situation has driven me giving up on em-dashes (hopefully temporarily). The semi-colon suffices for that end.

Really? We usually get complaints of “Not THAT old whine again! What, too good for it??” whenever we point out that Protestants pretty much ignore the entire OT out of hand, while only atheists obsess over every semi-colon.

Oddly many early computer keyboards eschewed the semi-colon/colon on one key, and put them in different places - e.g. the ASR 33 teletype has colon/star and semicolon/+ keys, a scheme duplicated on the Acorn Atom, Dragon 32, Nascom 1, TRS80 and probably others around the late 70s, early 80s.

There is no evacuee plot line? It’s just a mechanism to get the kids away from their parents and to the professor’s house. It’s a plot comma, or a best plot semi-colon, not a line.

The keyboard layout is taken from manual typewriters, which are the same in this regard.
If it had been the other way around on the manual typewriters, then computer languages would have been developed so that the colon was used where the semi-colon is instead.

I love an Oxford comma and a semi colon. All the little dashes, hyphens and apostrophes. Thats what happens when you read more than you speak growing, I feel. (A baseless but personal generalization)

Look at their behind. If their holes look like a : (colon), they are a boy. If their holes look like ; (semi colon), they are a girl.

I just wanna say that you will attribute the semi-colon to AI over my cold dead fangers; I did not take AP classes for some code to take credit for the beauty of dashes and parentheses from those with the skill to use English punctuation; I’ll be damned if I learned a punctuation train for nothing
