The semver library used in npm, yarn and pnpm could be made 33x faster.

Ran into that while wondering why running `npm install` takes so long on the Preact repo.

Speeding up the JavaScript ecosystem - Semver
During the installation process, package managers run a bunch of semver comparisons. The semver library used in npm, yarn and pnpm can be made around 33x faster.

According to semver logic, 2.0 would be for a breaking change. Which part of the app should we break so it can be a 2.0

And for everyone constantly yelling about semver, semver is a library / API versioning system. It literally requires that you declare a public API and *that* is what you're versioning. Not applicable.

I keep saying, big SemVer is always hard at work adding more SemVer 😆

Little-known fact, I wrote a cargo-semver-checks equivalent for Python, and it could handle both positional and keyword arguments, including their "only / both" flavors. It was kind of amazing how many footguns were in there.

Proposing an extended SemVer -

🗿 Epoch Semantic Versioning

to communicate better about versions.

Thinking of adopting this to all my projects, and finally eliminating my lousy habit of forever zero-major practice 😜

What do you think? 👀

We'd all benefit from cleanup.expand.polish semver style gaining widespread adoption
A minor version bump (new features) **should be** more interesting than a major version bump (breaking changes).

v2.4.0 -> Super cool new capability!
v3.0.0 -> Drop Node.js 16
v3.1.0 -> Another cool feature!

tired of ppl who dont know how semver works :/ 2.00 comes after 1.ff not 1.99 obviously
Oooohhh, Rust nightly is already at version 1.99!

Can't wait to see what they've cooked up for Rust 2.00 :D
Exciting times!

Rust CI now runs cargo-semver-checks to prevent accidental breakage in the standard library 🦀

If you're wondering why that's important and why it took 15kLoC+, this post is for you.

the more I age, the more I detest software at a visceral, personal level. Every pointless deprecation, bullshit API change, vibe-coded regression, violation of semver, godawful UI change in tooling I use, etc. that I have to put up with is time not spent enjoying my brief time on Earth

New blog post + cargo-semver-checks v0.42 is out ✨

I found some unexspected sharp edges in the `#[target_feature]` attribute. They are getting fixed (teamwork! 🤜🤛), and cargo-semver-checks now also has lints to save you from footguns!

SemVer is tricky in all languages. But in #rustlang it's easier than ever before!

By the end of 2024, cargo-semver-checks' capabilities were growing exponentially: 30 -> 57 -> 120 lints. We now end 2025 with 242 lints — 122 new lints were merged this calendar year 🎉

The exponential continues!

If you look in the mirror and say "no semver breaking changes this release" three times, @predr.ag will appear behind you
I’d heard the rumours, but now I know it’s true.

When you publish breaking change in your #rustlang crate, @predr.ag spontaneously appears. He can **feel** the disturbance.

Good idea, didn't check that. It looks like @std/semver is faster for validation, but way slower for calling `satisifes`. First image is validate + satisfies, second is satisfies only
