Quote from one of the participants: "I speak Setswana. At least, I think it's Setswana." Great illustration of heavy contact influence in urban areas.

Ich: Begrüße die Pilotin auf Setswana (die nationale Sprache in Botswana).

Anderer deutscher Tourist: „Oh, Sie sprechen Afrikanisch?”

Ich habe bei so viel Ignoranz wirklich keine Lust und Energie mehr, noch freundlich zu antworten.

random stray thought, in setswana the only difference between the word for piss and the word for pastor is the last vowel sound

A monument to Taras Shevchenko has been installed in Botswana, the first in Africa.

“During the ceremony, the dean of the Faculty of Humanities read his own translation of ‘Testament’ into Botswana’s national language — Setswana,” Sybiha wrote.

Wow! Reminds me of how pedagogically in the Setswana alphabet are pronounced with this really exaggerated high F0 youtu.be/YR9R7AkvvxY (unsure if this is more broadly reflected in the tonal system or just a convention)

I have family members born and raised in Botswana. They speak setswana. They would never say they’re of African descent- even though they’ve been there for decades. There’s a clear difference.

totally on the money

BTW, "tla" [spelled Ꮭ] means "no" in Otali Cherokee, and "atl" means "water" in Nahuatl. Not many other languages have the /t͡ɬ/ phoneme: Tlingit, Setswana, Levantine Arabic, a handful more.

So what about English? Why does the -ttle approximation make me shudder?

"It rains so little in Botswana that the country’s people revere precipitation. The Setswana word for rain – pula – also means wealth or blessing, and lends its name to the country’s currency."

it occurred to me for the first time recently that even though we tend to think of xhosa and zulu as languages with clicking sounds, setswana does have a relatively similar thing going on specifically with the "tl" sound
